Why this one specifically
Pocket-screw length is chosen by how much material the screw has to travel through before it reaches the mating piece, and at 1/2" there's very little margin for error either way: too short and the screw doesn't bite enough of the second board to hold; too long and the tip can blow through the far face of thin material entirely, especially in a softer plywood core. This is also the thickness range where a coarse-thread screw designed for softwood and plywood matters more than at heavier thicknesses, since thin cabinet-grade plywood doesn't hold a fine-thread screw's shallower bite as well.
