About This Site

This site exists because the woodworking calculators already online are, almost without exception, single-purpose ad pages: one for board feet, a different domain entirely for wood movement, a third for miter angles — none of them sharing a species reference, a dimension table, or even a consistent set of assumptions about moisture content. That fragmentation isn't a minor annoyance; it means the numbers you get from three different calculators for the same project may not even be internally consistent with each other.

What we built instead

Five calculators — board feet and lumber cost, a cut-list optimiser, wood movement, miter and compound-bevel angles, and finished weight — all reading from the same underlying species and dimension data, so a species page's stated shrinkage coefficient is the exact number the movement calculator uses, not an approximation copied into a second, disconnected tool. Behind the calculators sits a reference layer: a page per common wood species, a joinery reference covering the real mechanics of roughly forty joints, and a dimension/conversion reference covering everything from nominal-vs-actual lumber sizes to sandpaper grit progression.

Where the numbers come from

Species data — density, Janka hardness, and wood-movement coefficients — is sourced from published reference material, principally USDA Forest Products Laboratory data and equivalent citable sources, with the specific source recorded per species. Movement coefficients get particular care: a wrong shrinkage number is the one mistake on this site capable of directly ruining a reader's finished project, so every movement figure is traceable to a stated source rather than a rounded-off approximation.

Every worked example is computed, not typed

Any numeric example that appears in the reference pages, the blog, or the product PDF was run through this site's own calculators before publishing — never estimated by hand and pasted in. If a tool's math changes, the worked examples referencing it get re-checked, not left stale.

Independence

This site is independently built and operated. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any lumber supplier, tool manufacturer, or software vendor mentioned in its reference content. Species names, joinery techniques, and dimensional-lumber standards referenced throughout are general woodworking knowledge and published industry standards, not proprietary to any single company.
