Pocket Hole Screw Length Guide
A pocket screw through 3/4 inch stock wants roughly 1.25 inches of length, because its angled path eats into the length differently than a straight screw's.
A pocket-hole screw doesn't drive straight through a joint the way a standard wood screw does — it's driven at a shallow angle through a jig-guided hole in one board, across the joint line, and into the face of the second board — which means its correct length is set by the combined geometry of the angled path and the material thickness, not by the simple face-to-face thickness a standard screw's length is chosen against.

Why the angle changes the math
A standard screw driven perpendicular to a joint line penetrates a distance equal to its own length minus whatever's left proud or countersunk. A pocket screw travels its length along a diagonal path through the first board before it ever reaches the joint line, which means a meaningful portion of the screw's total length is "used up" just crossing the angled bore before any of it engages the second board at all. That's why pocket screw lengths look longer relative to material thickness than a standard screw's length would for the same joint — the extra length isn't wasted, it's consumed by the angle.

Pocket-hole screw systems commonly offer coarse-thread screws (for solid wood, where coarser threads grip long grain well) and fine-thread screws (for plywood and MDF, where a finer thread pitch resists stripping out of the material's more consistent but less fibrous structure) at the same lengths in this table — the length selection above is independent of that choice, but picking the wrong thread type for the material is a separate, equally common mistake worth checking on the screw's packaging alongside length.

A practical calibration step worth doing once
Every pocket-hole jig brand calibrates its guide-hole angle slightly differently, and the length table above reflects commonly published, brand-general guidance rather than one manufacturer's exact spec. Before committing a full project's worth of pocket screws to a length choice, drive one test joint in scrap at the intended combined thickness and check that the screw tip doesn't break through the second board's face — a five-minute check that catches a mismatched jig-and-screw-length combination before it shows up as a visible screw tip poking through a finished panel face.
Common material-thickness cases worth knowing by heart
Two combinations come up often enough to be worth memorizing directly rather than looking up every time: 3/4" material (the actual thickness of nominal 1x stock or 3/4" plywood, per /reference/nominal-vs-actual-1x-boards/ and /reference/plywood-sheet-sizes-and-thickness/) falls in the 5/8"–7/8" band, calling for a 1.25" screw, and 1/2" material falls right at the bottom edge of the first band, also typically taking a 1" screw. Both are common enough — face frames, cabinet sides, drawer boxes — that most pocket-hole kits ship with a starter assortment weighted toward exactly these two lengths.
Where thin material needs a different joint entirely
Below about 1/2" combined thickness, pocket screws stop being a reliable option — there's not enough material for the jig's angled bore to leave adequate wall thickness around the screw without breaking through a face, and thinner joints are better served by a different mechanical fastener (/joinery/biscuit-joint/, /joinery/dowel-joint/) or by a glued joint reinforced with a spline. Pocket screws are a strong, fast option across their intended thickness range, not a universal answer for every joint thickness a project might call for.
