A lighter, softer relative of ash, minus the bulk

At 31 lb/ft³ and 630 lbf on the Janka scale, sassafras is ring-porous like ash but noticeably lighter and softer — it cuts easily, and a full board's worth is light enough to carry one-handed. The tree itself rarely grows large, so boards tend to run narrow, which keeps sassafras out of case-good furniture and squarely in the territory of boxes, small parts, and accents where narrow stock is no obstacle.

A stable wood in narrow, practical widths

Tangential shrinkage of 6.2% against a radial figure of 4% gives a 1.6 ratio — comfortably stable. Sassafras is rated durable — historically used for fence rails, cooperage, and small boats specifically because it holds up outdoors better than its light weight would suggest. It comes in around $8 a board foot, this site's moderate tier, despite the modest size of most boards. Boxes, small boats, fence rails, furniture, and drawer sides are its main markets. The safety note matters here more than for most domestic species: safrole, the compound responsible for that root-beer smell, is a recorded irritant and is regulated as a carcinogen in food applications, and sanding dust can cause respiratory irritation — normal shop ventilation and a dust mask are sensible precautions rather than an overreaction.

Where it fits against similarly light domestic woods

Sassafras and red alder occupy a similar working-difficulty and cost bracket, though sassafras carries a genuinely distinct identity through its aroma and colour that alder, mostly bought to imitate other species, doesn't offer. For a small box or drawer project where narrow stock is fine and a warm natural colour is wanted without staining, sassafras is a specific and somewhat overlooked option.

Is it actually dangerous to work with sassafras in a home shop? At normal woodworking exposure levels with reasonable ventilation and dust control, the risk is manageable; the regulatory concern around safrole centers on ingestion in food and beverage products, not incidental exposure from sawing or sanding, though avoiding heavy, unventilated dust exposure is still good practice.

Does gluing up narrower sassafras boards for a wider tabletop create a colour-matching problem the way it might with a more variable species? Not especially — sassafras's open, ring-porous structure and consistent orange-brown tone under a clear finish generally match well board to board, so a glued-up panel reads reasonably uniform without the careful colour-sorting a species with wider natural colour variation would demand.

Does sassafras lumber actually smell like root beer permanently, or does the scent fade? The aroma is strongest when the wood is freshly cut or sanded and fades noticeably once the piece is finished and ages, though a light sanding on an old piece will often bring a faint trace of the smell back.

Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
