A surprising amount of the "cherry" and "walnut" furniture sold at mid-market price points is neither — it's red alder (Alnus rubra), stained to match. The wood takes dye and pigment so evenly that furniture manufacturers have leaned on that trick for decades, and it's the main reason alder shows up on more cabinet doors than most shoppers realize.
A soft wood that still holds a crisp edge
At 28 lb/ft³ and a Janka of just 590 lbf, red alder is genuinely soft — well below red maple's 950 lbf and nowhere near hard maple's 1,450 — but it doesn't behave like a mushy wood at the bench. It cuts with hand tools almost like pine, yet it holds a clean arris and a crisp moulding profile the way pine won't, which is why furniture and cabinet shops reach for it instead of a true softwood when the piece needs both ease of machining and a sharp finished line. The tradeoff shows up fast in handling: a dropped clamp or a careless edge against a bench leaves a dent that finish won't hide, so staging and padding matter more with alder than with a denser hardwood.
Movement is moderate, and the wood forgives mistakes better than most
Tangential shrinkage of 7.3% against a radial figure of 4.4% gives a tangential:radial ratio of 1.7 — under this site's 2.0 movement-prone line, and better-behaved than beech or elm despite alder's much lower density. Take a 10"-wide cabinet door stile through a typical seasonal swing, 11% interior-summer moisture content settling to 6% in a dry winter, and it loses roughly 0.122" (3.1mm) across the width — alder's own tangential coefficient, not a generic rule of thumb. Gluing, finishing, and the one real weakness
Alder glues about as easily as anything in the shop — no pretreatment, no fussy open time, no surprises. Finishing is where it earns its reputation: it takes stain evenly enough to convincingly mimic cherry or walnut, which is exactly why so much furniture-grade alder never gets sold as alder at all. The weakness is durability — it's rated non-durable and genuinely attractive to insects, so it belongs indoors and off a concrete floor where it could wick moisture. Sand it in stages rather than jumping grits; coarse scratches telegraph badly once stain goes on, more visibly than on a harder, less absorbent wood.
Cost, sourcing, and where it competes
At roughly $4.50 per board foot, alder sits at the budget end of this site's cost tiers, priced close to quaking aspen and considerably below red maple or yellow-poplar. It grows fast in the Pacific Northwest, which keeps supply reliable and the price stable in a way that oaks and walnuts, tied to slower-growing hardwood markets, are not. Furniture frames, cabinet doors, turnings, and plywood core are the four uses that account for most commercial alder, plus one unrelated niche: it's the traditional wood for smoking salmon, a use that has nothing to do with its structural properties and everything to do with a mild, faintly sweet smoke.
Where it sits next to the alternatives
A shop choosing between alder and red maple is usually choosing between ease of machining and hardness — alder cuts and sands faster and cheaper, maple resists dents and wear better, and neither one is the "correct" answer independent of the piece. Against yellow-poplar, the other classic paint-and-stain-grade utility hardwood, alder's warmer natural tone under stain is the deciding factor for most cabinet shops, since poplar's green-tinged sapwood needs more filling to hide under a light finish. For joinery, alder's moderate movement and forgiving hardness make it a reasonable candidate for pocket-hole joinery and other mechanically-fastened cabinet construction where a denser wood would resist the screw more and split more readily near an edge.
What people actually ask about alder
Is "alder" furniture actually a lower-quality product than cherry or walnut furniture? Not inherently — it's a legitimate hardwood with real structural properties, just a softer and cheaper one. The concern is honesty in labelling, not the wood itself: a piece described as "cherry-finished alder" is being sold accurately, while one simply called "cherry" when it's stained alder is not.
Does staining an alder door to look like cherry or walnut make the dent risk during installation worse, since the finish film might show marks more? Stain colour itself doesn't change the underlying softness, but a darker, glossier film finish can make a shallow dent more visually obvious under raking light than a lighter, matte surface would, which is worth factoring into finish choice on a piece being sold to mimic a harder-looking species.
Can alder be used outdoors if it's sealed well? No — its non-durable rating is about the wood's natural resistance to decay and insects, not about moisture exposure alone, and no film finish reliably compensates for that over years of weather. Keep it interior, or accept a short service life outdoors.

They are derived from the shrinkage figures the standard way - divide the total green-to-oven-dry shrinkage by 30, the nominal fibre saturation point - so that you can multiply width by the change in moisture content and get an answer in inches. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
