Reclaimed "heart pine" flooring pulled from a century-old mill or warehouse and freshly cut longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) share a species name and almost nothing else in practical terms — the old-growth material is tighter-ringed, denser, and dramatically more resinous than anything growing on managed second-growth land today, and treating the two as interchangeable is a common and costly mistake.

The densest southern pine, old growth or new

At 41 lb/ft³ and 870 lbf on the Janka scale, longleaf pine is the densest of the southern pine group — hard enough in its resinous old-growth form to rival some domestic hardwoods. Resin content is the defining working challenge: it gums blades and clogs abrasives readily, so keeping a rag and solvent at the bench isn't optional with this species the way it might be with a drier softwood.

Movement, and a heavy flooring-board weight

Tangential shrinkage of 7.5% against a radial figure of 5.1% gives a 1.5 ratio, reasonably stable. An 8"-wide board seasoning from a wet 15% down to a drier 9% loses about 0.12" (3mm) across its width; the wood movement calculator runs the same math for other widths. Working reclaimed stock, and the resin problem at glue-up

Fresh or reclaimed, resin content interferes with gluing — a solvent wipe or planing a truly fresh surface immediately before glue-up gives a much better bond than working over an aged, oxidized face. Reclaimed heart pine specifically demands a metal-detector pass before it meets a blade, since old nails and hardware hide inside boards pulled from demolished structures. On finishing, the very high resin content slows the cure of oil-based finishes noticeably; shellac seals it far more reliably as a first coat.

Durability, cost, and the reclaimed premium

Longleaf pine's heartwood is moderately durable, and the resinous old-growth material genuinely exceeds that baseline rating by a real margin — the same resin that causes working headaches also confers extra rot resistance. At roughly $6 per board foot for current second-growth stock, longleaf pine is affordable; reclaimed old-growth heart pine commands a substantial premium over that baseline, priced more like a specialty hardwood than a commodity softwood. Flooring, timber framing, heavy construction, boat keels, and reclaimed panelling round out its markets.

An ecosystem in genuine recovery, not just a lumber species

Longleaf pine forests have declined to a small fraction of their historic extent across the southeastern United States, and active restoration efforts are underway in several states — the species carries no formal trade restriction, but the ecological story behind its scarcity is worth knowing for anyone specifying it, particularly reclaimed old-growth material salvaged from structures rather than freshly logged.

Set against the pine it's most often grouped with

Southern yellow pine, the broader commercial grading group, includes longleaf alongside several related, generally less dense southern pine species — a board simply labeled "southern yellow pine" at a lumberyard may or may not be longleaf specifically, and a buyer who wants this particular species' greater density and resin content should ask directly rather than assuming the label guarantees it.

What people actually ask about longleaf pine

Does reclaimed heart pine actually cost more per board foot than freshly sawn old-growth longleaf, if a buyer could somehow get both? Reclaimed material usually costs more despite the extra labour of de-nailing and re-milling it, since genuinely old-growth standing timber is essentially unavailable to cut fresh today — the reclamation market is, in practice, the only route to that density and resin content at any price.

Once shellac has been applied to seal resin migration, does it need to be reapplied periodically, or is one coat permanent? One properly applied shellac sealer coat under the topcoat is generally a one-time step — it's not the shellac wearing out that causes stickiness to reappear later, it's a board that was insufficiently sealed the first time or has resin pockets the sealer didn't fully cover.

If a board doesn't have visible growth rings on its face, is there another way to judge whether it's old-growth? Weight is a reasonable secondary check — old-growth heart pine's higher resin content and tighter cell structure make it noticeably heavier for its size than a second-growth board of the same species and dimensions, even when the ring pattern itself isn't easy to read on a finished face.

It is a US federal government publication, it is in the public domain, and it is the reference most other woodworking sites are quietly copying. For the handful of woods those tables do not cover, we use The Wood Database, which reproduces the same FPL figures species by species; every entry says which source its numbers came from. The movement coefficients are not a separate measurement. They are derived from the shrinkage figures the standard way - divide the total green-to-oven-dry shrinkage by 30, the nominal fibre saturation point - so that you can multiply width by the change in moisture content and get an answer in inches. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
