"Southern yellow pine" isn't a single tree — the name covers loblolly, longleaf, shortleaf and slash pine sold and graded together as one commercial group, because the four species cluster tightly enough in density and strength that separating them at the yard would serve no practical purpose. The figures on this page reflect loblolly pine specifically, the dominant species in the group; FPL's own tables show longleaf running slightly higher in shrinkage and shortleaf and slash sitting close to loblolly, so the group really is as tightly clustered as the single commercial name implies.

What's actually in a bundle of pressure-treated lumber

At 35 lb/ft³ and 690 lbf, southern yellow pine is heavier and harder than most other construction softwoods on this site — noticeably denser than Douglas-fir's 32 lb/ft³ despite Douglas-fir's reputation as the stronger structural species. Nearly everything sold as "pressure-treated lumber" at a home center is this species group, chosen specifically because its open cell structure takes preservative chemical treatment more readily than tighter-grained softwoods. Straight off the treatment plant it's genuinely wet — treated stock is typically well above the moisture content of seasoned lumber — and it twists noticeably as it dries down to equilibrium, so stickering and acclimatising it before final cuts on anything that needs to stay flat is a real, not optional, step.

Movement, worked at deck-board scale

A tangential:radial ratio of 1.5 keeps southern yellow pine comfortably under the 2.0 movement-prone line, similar to white ash's 1.6. A 5.5"-wide board (the actual width of a nominal 2x6) moving from a wet pressure-treated 19% moisture content down to a seasoned 13% MC — a realistic swing for treated decking acclimatising outdoors — contracts about 0.081" (2.1mm) across its width, computed from this species' own 7.4% tangential shrinkage. That's a modest number, but it happens fast in service on freshly treated stock, which is exactly why deck boards installed wet and tight together often show visible gaps within the first season as they dry down to their eventual equilibrium. Working around the resin and the treatment chemistry

Resin is the main obstacle to gluing; kiln-dried, freshly surfaced stock bonds well, but treated stock straight off the rack often has enough surface moisture and chemical residue to interfere. Its hard latewood bands are dense enough to deflect a nail driven at an angle, a genuinely useful property in framing where fastener holding power matters, but an annoyance when trying to drive a finish nail cleanly. Finishing wet, pressure-treated stock simply doesn't work — stain and paint won't hold until the board reads under roughly 15% moisture content, which for freshly treated lumber can take weeks to months outdoors depending on climate.

Cost, durability, and the safety note that's specific to this wood

At around $3.50 per board foot, southern yellow pine is one of the cheapest woods on this entire site. Its heartwood is only moderately durable on its own, and because most commercially available yard stock is sapwood rather than heartwood, it's nearly always sold pressure-treated specifically to compensate for that lack of natural decay resistance. The preservative chemistry itself is a real safety consideration distinct from anything about the wood species: never burn pressure-treated offcuts, and wear dust protection when cutting or sanding it, since the treatment chemicals become airborne along with the wood dust.

Where it's used, and the untreated alternative for interior framing

Pressure-treated decking, general framing, plywood, roof trusses and utility poles are the five uses this species group shows up in most, decking and framing dominating by volume. For interior framing where the preservative chemistry is unnecessary and untreated lumber is both cheaper and safer to cut without special precautions, douglas-fir is the more common structural choice in much of the country, while southern yellow pine remains the default anywhere pressure-treated exterior lumber specifically is called for.

Common questions about southern yellow pine

Is it safe to build a raised garden bed or planter from pressure-treated southern yellow pine? Modern preservatives (alkaline copper quaternary and similar formulations, which replaced the older chromated copper arsenate treatments) are generally considered acceptable for garden use by current guidance, but anyone concerned about soil contact with edibles can line the bed with plastic sheeting or choose an untreated or naturally durable species like western redcedar instead.

Is there a way to avoid the gapping problem entirely, or does every pressure-treated deck go through this shrinkage phase? Letting the treated stock acclimate outdoors for several weeks to months before installation, until it reaches closer to its eventual equilibrium moisture content, meaningfully reduces post-installation gapping — most of the visible-gap complaints come from boards installed straight off the treatment plant while still genuinely wet.

Does it actually matter for a typical framing or decking project which of the four southern yellow pine species is in the bundle? For standard structural and pressure-treated decking use, no — the species cluster tightly enough in strength and density that the grading group's structural values apply regardless; species identity only becomes relevant for something like specifically wanting longleaf's historically higher resin content and density for a specialty application.

Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
