Butternut (Juglans cinerea) is black walnut's own genus-mate, and the family resemblance shows in the open grain and the easy machining — what's missing is the weight. Where walnut sits at 38 lb/ft³, butternut runs a full third lighter at 27, which is why it earned the nickname "white walnut" from carvers who wanted walnut's look without walnut's mass or price.
The soft cousin of a premium wood
At 27 lb/ft³ and a Janka of just 490 lbf, butternut is dramatically softer than black walnut's 1,010 lbf — closer in hardness to basswood than to its own relative. Carvers reach for it specifically when they want more visual interest than basswood offers without walnut's cost or density; the softness has a real cost of its own, though, since chisel walls crush under normal clamp pressure and end grain wants a genuinely sharp blade or it crumbles rather than cutting cleanly.
Movement, and what a canker-thinned resource looks like at the yard
Tangential shrinkage of 6.4% against a radial figure of 3.4% gives a tangential:radial ratio of 1.9 — just under this site's 2.0 movement-prone line. A 12"-wide panel carried from a humid 12% moisture content in summer down to a dry 6% in winter gives up close to 0.154" (3.9mm) of width by butternut's own tangential coefficient; a different width or swing runs through the wood movement calculator the same way. Butternut canker, a fungal disease with no effective control, has killed a large share of the standing resource across its range, and boards reaching the market today are typically short, narrow, and sold as character-grade rather than clear stock — plan a project around what's actually available rather than assuming long, wide, clean boards will be easy to find.
Working it and finishing it
Glues easily, with the one real caution being that the low density makes it possible to starve a joint if you clamp too hard and squeeze out more adhesive than the porous surface can hold. Finishing is where butternut shines: it takes oil beautifully and deepens to a soft honey brown that shows off the open grain, while pigment stain tends to bury the exact figure that makes the wood worth choosing over basswood in the first place.
Durability, cost, and a light-hearted market
Butternut is rated moderately decay resistant — better than its soft, light structure would suggest, though still not a wood for outdoor exposure. At roughly $9 per board foot it commands a real premium over basswood or aspen despite being similarly soft, a price driven directly by the canker-reduced supply rather than any working property. Relief carving, church interiors, boxes, panelling, and furniture accents are the main uses; the church-interior tradition in particular dates to when clear butternut was abundant enough to carve entire chancels and reredos from it.
What it competes with, and why it's not really optional anymore
For carvers choosing between butternut and basswood, the deciding factor is almost always figure and colour — basswood carves marginally more cleanly and costs less, but butternut's open grain and warm honey tone under oil give a result basswood simply can't match. Against black walnut itself, butternut is not really a budget substitute so much as a different material entirely: it's a third the hardness, doesn't hold fine detail the way walnut does, and increasingly commands walnut-adjacent pricing anyway because of the canker-driven scarcity, which has eroded the "cheap alternative" case that once existed for it.
What people actually ask about butternut
Is butternut actually endangered, or is that an exaggeration? It's genuinely serious — Canada lists the species as endangered under its Species at Risk Act, and researchers have been crossing surviving butternuts with the canker-resistant Japanese walnut in an attempt to breed a resistant strain, though no widely available resistant butternut yet exists commercially.
Does a specialty hardwood dealer who focuses on salvage and urban lumber have better odds of clear butternut than a general hardwood yard? Yes, generally — a dealer who specifically tracks individual tree removals and salvage logs is far more likely to have occasionally encountered a clear, disease-free specimen than a general yard buying from a standard wholesale mix, so it's worth checking specialty and urban-lumber sources before assuming clear stock simply doesn't exist anywhere.
Is butternut a good beginner carving wood, or should I start with basswood? Basswood is the more forgiving starting point because its softer, more uniform texture tolerates a less-than-perfectly-sharp tool better; butternut rewards more carving experience and a genuinely sharp edge, but gives a richer result once you have both.

Where these figures come fromShrinkage figures on this page come from the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook (General Technical Report FPL-GTR-190, 2010) - Table 4-3 for North American species and Table 4-4 for imported ones. It is a US federal government publication, it is in the public domain, and it is the reference most other woodworking sites are quietly copying. For the handful of woods those tables do not cover, we use The Wood Database, which reproduces the same FPL figures species by species; every entry says which source its numbers came from. The movement coefficients are not a separate measurement. They are derived from the shrinkage figures the standard way - divide the total green-to-oven-dry shrinkage by 30, the nominal fibre saturation point - so that you can multiply width by the change in moisture content and get an answer in inches. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
