Ask a hundred furniture makers to name one wood without hesitating and a large share will say black walnut (Juglans nigra). What's less well known is that most of what ships under that name today has been steamed — a kiln step that drives the tree's dark heartwood pigment out into the pale sapwood so a board reads uniform brown from edge to edge. Air-dried, unsteamed walnut keeps a much more purple-brown heartwood and a nearly white sapwood, and the two used to be considered separate grades before steaming became standard practice.
Why it's heavy enough to notice but light enough to lift
At 38 lb/ft³ and a Janka of 1,010 lbf, walnut sits in an unusual middle ground: harder than cherry or red maple (both 950 lbf) but nowhere near ring-porous oak's abrasiveness, and lighter than red oak's 43.8 lb/ft³ by a genuinely noticeable margin when you're carrying a stack of it. That combination — hard enough to hold an edge, light enough to handle all day — is a large part of why it became the default American cabinet wood once mahogany imports got expensive.
Movement is where walnut earns its reputation for good behaviour
Tangential shrinkage of 7.8% against a radial figure of 5.5% gives a tangential:radial ratio of 1.4 — comfortably below the 2.0 threshold that marks a wood as movement-prone, and better-behaved than red oak's 2.1 or hard maple's 2.1. A 22"-wide flatsawn walnut slab (the kind used for a live-edge or bookmatched tabletop) moving from a humid 10% moisture content down to a dry 6% MC winter reading contracts about 0.229" (5.8mm) across its width — computed directly from walnut's own tangential coefficient, not a rule of thumb. Cut the same panel quartersawn and the movement drops to roughly 0.161" over the same swing, because you're now on the radial axis instead. What it's actually like at the bench
Walnut carves, turns, planes and holds a screw without a fight, and it is dimensionally well-behaved for its density, which is exactly why eighteenth-century case pieces built from it still close their drawers properly. Glue joints are trouble-free — nothing in the wood fights an adhesive. The real gotcha isn't working it, it's finishing it: walnut fades under UV rather than darkening, the opposite of cherry, so a piece left in a sunlit room lightens toward tan over a few years while its cherry neighbor deepens toward red. Oil finishes bring out the colour dramatically; some shops grain-fill first, though a rubbed oil-varnish is the traditional answer and needs no filling at all.
Cost, and why it stays there
At roughly $14 per board foot for 4/4 rough stock, walnut sits in this site's "premium" cost tier alongside honduran mahogany and teak, well above oak or maple and below the true exotics. Demand from the gun-stock and veneer trades competes directly with furniture buyers for the same clear, straight-grained logs, which keeps supply tight regardless of species abundance. Where it goes, and what sits next to it on the comparison list
Fine furniture, gunstocks, veneer, carving and turned bowls are the five uses black-walnut shows up in most, and all five lean on the same trait: it's the rare wood that is both easy to work and handsome without help. A buyer choosing between walnut and its two nearest neighbours is usually choosing on colour and cost rather than performance — black-cherry machines just as easily and costs less but photo-darkens instead of fading, while hard-maple is harder, cheaper, and pale rather than brown. For joinery that depends on predictable movement, walnut's low tangential:radial ratio makes it a safe candidate for breadboard ends and other cross-grain construction where a more movement-prone species would need a wider allowance.
What people actually ask about walnut
Is the dust actually dangerous, or is that overcautious? It's a real, recorded hazard rather than shop folklore: juglone (the same compound that makes walnut toxic to horses and to many garden plants growing near a walnut tree) is present in the dust, and it's a documented skin and respiratory irritant with reported cases of occupational asthma. Dust collection at the tool, not just a shop vacuum after the fact, is the right response.
Can unsteamed walnut sapwood be darkened after the fact to match steamed lumber, or is the colour locked in once it's dry? A dye or a walnut-toned stain can visually close the gap for a single project, but it won't replicate steaming's even, all-the-way-through colour shift — a mixed board with both pale sapwood and dark heartwood will still show some contrast under a topical colourant that a genuinely steamed board wouldn't have.
Will a walnut tabletop actually get lighter over time? Yes, if it sits in direct or even indirect sun; the colour shift is real and happens over one to several years depending on light exposure, which is worth mentioning to a client before delivery so they don't mistake fading for a finish failure.

At the bench
One of the very few woods that is both easy to work and genuinely beautiful without help. It carves, turns, planes and holds a screw, and it is dimensionally well-behaved for its density. The real trap is colour: most commercial walnut is steamed to drive heartwood colour into the sapwood, which flattens the purple-brown tones that unsteamed air-dried stock keeps. And it fades in sunlight rather than darkening, the opposite of cherry.

Excellent. Nothing in walnut fights adhesives.
Finishing
Oil finishes deepen it dramatically. Some workers grain-fill it; a rubbed oil-varnish is the traditional answer.

They are derived from the shrinkage figures the standard way - divide the total green-to-oven-dry shrinkage by 30, the nominal fibre saturation point - so that you can multiply width by the change in moisture content and get an answer in inches. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
