A spline joint glues a loose strip of wood into matching grooves cut into both mating pieces — most often reinforcing an edge joint or a miter, converting part of what would otherwise be a weak glue geometry into genuine long-grain shear strength.
The one detail that decides whether a spline actually works
A spline's grain has to run across the joint line — perpendicular to it — not parallel to the boards it's joining. A spline cut so its grain runs the same direction as the joint is end grain glued into both grooves, which offers almost nothing over the joint it was meant to reinforce; a spline cut across the grain presents long-grain faces to both grooves and genuinely adds shear-resisting strength across the joint line. This single orientation choice is the difference between a spline that meaningfully strengthens a joint and one that's decorative.
Where it earns its keep
On a plain edge joint between two boards, a spline mostly does what a biscuit does — alignment during clamp-up — since the boards' own long-grain edges already glue about as well as wood joins. On a miter joint, where the mating faces are weak end grain, a properly grain-oriented spline is doing real structural work no other part of the joint provides, functionally similar to what a splined miter joint achieves as a named, dedicated technique — a spline joint and a splined miter describe largely the same reinforcement applied in slightly different contexts.
Sizing the groove and spline
Spline thickness is commonly a third to half the stock's thickness, matched to a groove cut with a straight bit or table-saw blade sized to the spline stock exactly — too loose a fit starves the glue joint of contact, too tight risks splitting the groove wall on assembly. Spline width (how far it reaches into each piece) is set to leave solid wood beyond the groove's floor on both sides, so the reinforced joint doesn't trade one weak point for another.
Why a spline milled slightly loose is worse than it looks
A spline that fits its groove loosely doesn't just glue weaker in proportion to the gap — a loose spline can also rock slightly inside the groove during clamp-up, which telegraphs as a hairline misalignment right at the joint line even after the glue has fully cured. Because the spline is hidden once assembled, that misalignment reads as a mysterious slight step in the finished surface rather than an obviously spline-related defect, which is why most shops test-fit spline stock in scrap grooves cut with the exact same setup before committing to the actual project pieces, rather than trusting a bit or blade's nominal width to match milled spline stock exactly.
Cut sequence
- Cut matching grooves in both mating pieces, referencing consistent fence and depth settings so the groove lands at the same position relative to each piece's face.
- Mill spline stock with its grain running across its width — this is the step to double-check before cutting, since a spline blank cut from the wrong grain orientation looks identical to a correctly oriented one until it's under load.
- Cut the spline to length, sized to reach solidly into both grooves without bottoming out and preventing the joint from closing fully.
- Dry-fit the spline in both grooves and confirm the joint closes flush.
- Glue the grooves and the spline, then clamp the joint closed.
Where this differs from a keyed miter
A spline is fitted into grooves cut before the joint is glued up and disappears entirely once assembled. A keyed (feathered) miter joint does something visually similar but from the outside, after glue-up, and is meant to be seen — the two techniques solve the same weak-end-grain problem but with opposite intentions about whether the reinforcement should be visible.
Why plywood makes an unusually good spline blank
Plywood's alternating-ply construction means it has no single grain direction to get wrong — a plywood spline glues equally well regardless of which way it's oriented in the groove, sidestepping the grain-orientation mistake described above entirely. The trade is thickness consistency: plywood is milled to metric-adjacent nominal thicknesses that don't always match a groove cut to fit true 1/8" or 1/4" solid-wood spline stock, so a groove intended for plywood spline material is usually sized against a sample of the actual sheet good rather than against a nominal fraction — the same actual-versus-nominal caution that applies to a dado cut for the same panel stock.
