Dado Joint — What It Is, Where the Strength Comes From, and the Numbers
A dado still carries real weight with no glue at all — the shelf simply bears on the channel's shoulder, the same way a ledge holds up anything set on it.

A dado is a channel cut straight across a board's width or length, sized to accept a shelf, divider, or panel edge — and it's one of the few joints on this site where the joint would still hold real weight even with no glue in it at all.
Why a dry dado still carries load
A shelf sitting in a dado bears directly on the channel's bottom shoulder — the wood underneath the shelf is physically holding it up, the same way a ledge holds up anything set on it, independent of any adhesive bond. For a 10"-wide shelf sitting in a 3/8"-deep dado, the shelf's end presents roughly 3.75 sq in of bearing face against that shoulder (10in × 0.375in) — real mechanical support that a dowel joint, a biscuit joint, or a plain rabbet simply doesn't offer in the same way, none of which give the mating piece anything to physically rest its weight on. Glue in a dado adds resistance to the shelf being pulled forward out of the channel, but the vertical load-bearing job is done by the channel's shoulder whether or not there's any adhesive present.
Sizing the channel
Width is cut to match the shelf stock's actual measured thickness — not its nominal size — since a dado cut to a nominal "3/4 inch" bit width will leave a sloppy, glue-starved gap around shelf stock that actually measures closer to 11/16" or 23/32" depending on the sheet good in use. Depth commonly runs a third to half the case side's thickness: deep enough for real bearing area and registration, shallow enough to leave solid material on both sides of the channel so the case side itself doesn't lose structural integrity at every shelf location.
Through dado versus what it costs on the front edge
A dado cut straight across a board's full width is visible on the front edge of the assembled case — a horizontal line at every shelf location, which some designs embrace and others specifically avoid. Where the front-edge line isn't wanted, a stopped dado solves the same bearing-and-registration problem without the channel reaching the front edge.
Cut sequence
- Mark the channel's width against the actual measured thickness of the shelf stock, checked with calipers or a direct test-fit rather than trusted to the material's nominal label.
- Set a router with a straight bit and edge guide, or a dado stack on a table saw, to the marked width and target depth.
- Cut the channel in one or several passes, testing fit with actual shelf stock before committing to the full depth on every location if cutting several identical dados.
- Clean any fuzz or splinter at the channel's edges, since a rough dado wall will show as a poor fit even when the width is correct.
- Dry-fit the shelf; it should slide in with light hand pressure and land solidly on the shoulder with no perceptible rock front-to-back.
- Glue if the assembly is permanent; skip glue (or glue only partially) if the shelf needs to remain removable or the case side needs room to move seasonally across a wide dado run.
Why a dado left slightly wide is safer than one cut slightly narrow
A dado cut a few thousandths wide leaves the shelf with a small amount of play but still fully bearing on the shoulder — mostly cosmetic, correctable with a shim if it bothers the maker. A dado cut narrow enough to need forcing risks splitting the case side along the channel wall as the shelf is driven home, since the thin remaining wall on either side of the channel has limited resistance to being wedged apart. This asymmetry is why most shops sneak up on the final width in small increments rather than trying to hit the exact target width on the first pass.
Where this differs from a rabbet in the strength math
A rabbet joint, cut only into an edge or end, offers shoulder-face glue area but no equivalent to a dado's full bearing shoulder under a load-bearing horizontal member — a dado is specifically the joint for a shelf or divider crossing a case side's width, where a rabbet is more suited to a corner.
Why confirming actual stock thickness is the one step worth the extra minute
Fast once the width is confirmed against actual stock — a router with an edge guide or a dado stack on a table saw cuts a dado in one or two passes. Confirming the actual thickness of the shelf stock beforehand is worth the extra minute it takes, since a dado cut to the wrong width by even 1/32" either won't accept the shelf or leaves a visible, glue-starved gap.
