Why a 2x4 isn't 2x4

A 2x4 measures 1.5 by 3.5 inches everywhere in North America, and it isn't a shortage or a trick — it's a published dimension in the softwood lumber standard.

Buy a "2x4" at any home center in North America and measure it, and you'll get 1.5 inches by 3.5 inches, every time, from every mill. That isn't a shortage, a shrinkflation trick, or a tolerance the mill happened to land on — it's a published dimension, written into the American Softwood Lumber Standard (DOC PS 20), and it's been the actual, deliberate target size for surfaced dimensional lumber for decades. The confusing part isn't that the number is wrong. It's that the name was never trying to be the actual measurement in the first place.

Where "2x4" comes from

A nominal 2x4 starts life at the sawmill closer to a true 2" x 4" — cut oversized on purpose, because the board is about to lose material twice before it reaches a job site. First it dries, and wood shrinks across its width and thickness as it loses moisture (see the wood movement post for the arithmetic behind that). Then it goes through a planer to get four smooth, dimensionally consistent faces — S4S, surfaced on all four sides — which removes additional material specifically to produce a clean, uniform, splinter-free piece of construction lumber. What's left after both steps, standardized across the industry, is 1.5" x 3.5". The "2x4" name describes the rough size before either of those steps happened, not the board in your hand.

Why this is a bigger error than it sounds like

Board feet scale with the cube of nothing and the product of everything — thickness times width times length — so a dimensional error on two of three axes compounds fast. Run an 8-foot 2x4 through the math both ways: the actual, S4S dimensions (1.5" x 3.5" x 96") give 3.5 board feet. Figure the same board at its nominal name (2" x 4" x 96") and you get 5.333 board feet — both numbers computed directly, not estimated. That's a 1.524× overstatement, not a rounding error: use the nominal number in a materials estimate and you'll buy, or budget for, more than half again the lumber the project actually needs.

Weight follows the identical trap. Douglas-fir runs about 32 lb/ft³ as milled. An 8-foot 2x4 at its real, actual dimensions weighs 9.33 lb. Figure it nominally instead and the same board "weighs" 14.22 lb — again a 1.524× error, because weight and board feet are both just volume times a constant, and volume is exactly where the nominal-vs-actual gap lives. Anyone estimating a project's total lumber weight — for a trailer load limit, a wall section going up onto a ledger, or just curiosity — needs the actual dimension in that calculation, not the name on the tag.

It's not a flat half-inch everywhere

The temptation is to memorize "subtract a half inch" and move on, but the loss isn't a fixed amount — it scales with the board's size, because a wider board sheds more material getting planed flat and has more cross-section to shrink as it dries. A nominal 1x4 actually measures 0.75" x 3.5" (a 1/4" loss on the narrow face, 1/2" on the wide face); a nominal 2x12 measures 1.5" x 11.25" (still a 1/2" loss on thickness, but 3/4" on width). Three places this actually costs you

  • Materials estimating. A cut list or a shopping list built against nominal sizes overstates the board feet needed by exactly the gap between nominal and actual — on a whole-house framing order that's real money, not a rounding footnote.
  • Joinery that has to fit. A dado, a notch, or a bracket sized to "a 2x4" and cut to a true 2" is either loose enough to need shimming or tight enough to need force — the actual stock is 1.5", and layout tools should be set to that number, not the name printed on the tag.
  • Anything structural. Span tables, deflection calculations, and load ratings are published against the dressed, actual cross-section, because that's the wood that's genuinely resisting the load. Plugging the nominal number into a structural calculation overstates the cross-section and understates real-world deflection — the opposite direction of error you want in anything holding weight.

Rough hardwood plays by a different rulebook entirely

Don't carry this nominal-vs-actual habit over to hardwood lumber bought for furniture work — it uses a completely separate convention, the quarter system (4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4), where the number is the board's rough thickness in quarters of an inch before any surfacing, not a construction-lumber nominal name. A rough 4/4 board starts life at a genuine 1" and typically finishes closer to 13/16" after two-sided surfacing — a smaller, gentler loss than a softwood 1x takes, but still not the full inch the price tag's "1 inch" implies. A standard, not a conspiracy

It's worth saying plainly why this isn't the "mills shrinking the product to save money" story it sometimes gets told as: the American Softwood Lumber Standard is a published, industry-wide specification, and every mill selling S4S dimensional lumber in North America targets the same actual sizes for the same nominal names, which is precisely what makes a 2x4 from one supplier interchangeable with a 2x4 from another on a job site. The naming convention predates modern power planing, back when a rough-sawn board really did start closer to its nominal size and the surfacing loss was smaller — the name simply never got updated as milling got more precise and yields got tighter, and it's stuck around because "nominal size" is a useful, stable label for ordering even though it stopped being a literal measurement generations ago. Metric lumber markets sidestep the whole issue by labeling actual dressed dimensions directly, which is arguably the more honest system — but it's not the one printed on a stud at a North American lumberyard.

The habit that fixes all of this

Whenever a plan, a receipt, or someone else's cut list gives a dimension without the word "actual" next to it, assume it's nominal and confirm with a tape measure before committing a cut — it costs thirty seconds, and it's the single cheapest insurance against discovering mid-assembly that a shelf cut to "fit a 2x4 opening" is three-eighths of an inch off.
