Nominal Vs Actual 2x4
An 8 foot 2x4 comes out to 3.5 board feet once you use its actual 1.5 x 3.5 inch size — a naive 2x4x8 calculation overstates that figure by about 1.52x.
A "2x4" has not measured 2 inches by 4 inches for well over a century, and the reason is a published industry standard, not a rounding convention or a modern cost-cutting trick.
The real numbers
A nominal 2x4 measures 1.5" x 3.5" actual, surfaced dry (S4S — surfaced on all four sides), under the American Softwood Lumber Standard (DOC PS 20). That's a loss of half an inch off the nominal thickness and half an inch off the nominal width — a 25% reduction on the thickness dimension and a 12.5% reduction on the width dimension, which is enough to matter directly in a board-foot calculation: run the actual 1.5" x 3.5" through the board foot calculator for an 8' 2x4 and you get 3.5 board feet, not the 5.333 board feet a naive 2" x 4" x 8' calculation would produce — the naive number overstates the true volume by about 1.52x (both figures computed by this site's own board-foot calculator, not estimated).
Where the difference comes from
The nominal size describes the board's dimensions at the rough-sawn stage, before it's dried and surfaced. A green (undried) board cut to a full 2" x 4" shrinks as it dries — wood shrinks across its width and thickness far more than along its length (see /reference/wood-hardness-janka-scale-explained/'s companion topic, wood movement, for why) — and then loses additional material on all four faces when it's run through a planer to get a smooth, uniform surface for construction use. The combination of drying shrinkage and surfacing loss consistently removes about 3/8" to 1/2" per dimension for standard dimensional lumber, and the published actual sizes reflect that real, measured loss rather than an arbitrary discount.

Notice the pattern isn't a flat half-inch loss across the board: the loss grows from 1/4" on a nominal 2" dimension to 3/4" on a nominal 8" dimension and beyond, because a wider board has more surface to plane flat and more shrinkage to account for as it dries — the percentage loss, not the absolute loss, is roughly consistent for a given species and drying process.
Why this matters beyond trivia
Three places this bites a project if you use the nominal number instead of the actual one:
- Board-foot and cost estimates. Board feet are computed from real dimensions, not the marketing name — a project bill of materials built on nominal sizes will overstate the lumber needed by exactly the percentage the actual dimension undershoots nominal, which compounds fast across a full cut list.
- Joinery layout. A dado or mortise sized to "fit a 2x4" needs to be cut to 1.5", not 2" — a mistake here either leaves a sloppy, glue-starved joint or one that doesn't fit at all.
- Structural calculations. Framing span tables, deflection calculations, and load ratings are all published against the actual dressed dimension, because that's the wood that's actually resisting the load — using the nominal number in a structural calculation overstates the lumber's cross-section and understates real deflection.
Rough lumber is a different system entirely
This nominal-vs-actual convention is specific to dimensional construction lumber — framing studs, joists, and similar S4S stock sold by the linear or board foot at a home center or lumberyard. Hardwood sold for furniture work uses an entirely different convention, the quarter system (4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4 — see /reference/rough-lumber-quarter-system/), where the number describes rough thickness in quarters of an inch before any surfacing at all. Don't cross the two systems: a rough 4/4 hardwood board is not the same thing as a nominal "1x" softwood board, even though both are colloquially called "an inch thick." A 4/4 hardwood board starts at a full 1" rough and typically finishes around 13/16" after two-sided surfacing — closer to nominal than a softwood 1x, but still not the full inch a casual glance at the price tag might suggest.
A quick sanity check before you cut
Whenever a plan, a cut list, or a lumberyard receipt gives you a size without saying "actual," assume it's nominal and confirm with a tape measure before you commit a cut. It costs thirty seconds and it's the single easiest way to avoid discovering, mid-assembly, that a shelf sized from the nominal number is three-eighths of an inch short of the dado it's supposed to fill.
