Leave roughly +0.504" (+12.8 mm) of working clearance for a breadboard end on a 24"-wide white oak tabletop — that's the full seasonal width swing between 6% and 12% moisture content, and unlike a glued panel edge, a breadboard joint has to absorb every bit of it at one single joint rather than spreading it invisibly across a case.

Why this one specifically

A breadboard end works by running its grain perpendicular to the tabletop's — which is exactly why the two pieces fight each other seasonally instead of moving together the way a normal glued panel edge would. The tenons (or a sliding spline) have to be cut with enough play in the mortises to let the full width swing happen without splitting either part, and any screws or pegs fixing the joint need elongated holes rather than round ones so the fastener can slide as the tabletop grows and shrinks. Only the centre fastener, if there is one, should be fixed tight — everything outboard of it needs room to travel.

What moves the number

Panel width and species both scale this directly — a narrower top, or a lower-movement species than white oak, needs less breadboard clearance. The actual seasonal humidity swing where the piece will live also matters more than the shop's swing while it's being built; a table headed for a consistently climate-controlled room needs less allowance than one going somewhere with real seasonal humidity change.
