An 8-foot 2x6 contains 5.5 board feet — and at this specific length and actual thickness (1.5"), the board-foot count happens to equal the actual width in inches exactly, because (1.5 x 8) / 12 works out to 1, leaving the width unmultiplied by anything else.

Why this one specifically

That's not a coincidence unique to the 2x6 — any 2x-thick board at 8 feet gives a board-foot count numerically equal to its actual width, which is a handy mental shortcut for the whole 2x-at-8-foot family: a 2x8x8 gives 7.25, a 2x10x8 would give 9.25, and so on, all without running the full formula.

What moves the number

The usual actual-versus-nominal caveat applies: this uses the real 1.5" x 5.5" dressed size, not the nominal 2" x 6", and using the nominal figure would overstate the true volume the same way it does for a 2x4. Length is the only other variable at a fixed cross-section — a 12-foot 2x6 contains exactly 1.5 times this figure, since board feet scales linearly with length.
