An 8-foot 2x4 contains 3.5 board feet — not the 5.333 board feet a naive "2 inches x 4 inches x 8 feet" calculation gives, because that naive figure uses the nominal size instead of the actual 1.5" x 3.5" dressed dimension, overstating the true volume by 1.524x.

Why this one specifically

This is the single most miscalculated board-foot figure on this site, precisely because it's also the single most common size anyone reaches for first — the nominal "2x4" label is so familiar that it's easy to plug straight into the formula without stopping to use the actual dimension, and the resulting error compounds across an entire framing takeoff if nobody catches it.

What moves the number

Only length changes this cleanly: the cross-section is fixed by the nominal-to-actual standard, so board feet scales linearly with length alone. A 10-foot piece of the identical cross-section contains 4.375 board feet — exactly 1.25x this figure, tracking the 10/8 length ratio.
