Why this one specifically

1x12 is the widest common 1x board, used for wide shelving and stair risers, and it's also the size where the nominal-to-actual surfacing loss (0.75" off a 12" nominal width) is most visible in absolute terms — a shelf designed to a true 12" depth using the nominal number, rather than the actual 11.25", will come up noticeably short.

What moves the number

As always, this uses the actual 0.75" x 11.25" dressed dimension rather than the nominal 1" x 12"; using the nominal figure would overstate the true volume, the same gap that applies across the whole dimensional-lumber lineup. Because 1x12 is bought at the actual width more often than any other 1x size for a design that needs a specific finished depth, confirming the actual 11.25" figure against a plan drawn in nominal terms is worth the thirty seconds it takes.
