At 12.66 lb for an 8-foot length, a 1x12 is the heaviest board in the common 1x lineup — heavy enough that it's worth noting it weighs nearly as much as a 2x6 (12.38 lb) despite being less than half as thick, purely because it's almost 6" wider (11.25" actual against 5.5").

Why this one specifically

1x12 is the go-to for wide shelving and stair risers, and it's also the widest board where the standard nominal-to-actual surfacing loss (0.75" off the nominal 12" width, down to an actual 11.25") starts to matter visibly in a design that assumes the full nominal width — a shelf planned to a true 12" depth using the nominal number will come up 3/4" short.

What moves the number

The usual SPF caveats apply here too: this is the dry, 12%-moisture-content reference weight, and construction-grade stock straight from an uncovered rack commonly runs wetter and heavier until it acclimates. Species mix within the SPF grading group adds a smaller, secondary swing on top of that moisture effect.
