Ziricote (Cordia dodecandra) is prized and cursed by the exact same trait: the spider-webbing figure — dense black lines fanning across a grey-brown ground — that makes it one of the most striking tonewoods available is produced by the same internal structure that makes those same figured areas the most likely places for the board to check during seasoning.
Buy it dry, and inspect before you commit an expensive set
At 50 lb/ft³ and 1,970 lbf on the Janka scale, ziricote machines and polishes exceptionally well once it's stable. The seasoning risk is real enough that most experienced buyers insist on already-dried stock rather than green material, and sealing the ends the moment a board arrives is standard practice. Before resawing an expensive set for a guitar back, inspecting carefully for hairline checks along the figured areas can save a costly mistake.
Movement, and a bookmatched back-panel weight
Radial shrinkage of 3.5% against a tangential figure of 6.7% gives a 1.9 ratio, just under this site's movement-prone threshold. The natural oils here are genuinely less troublesome than bocote's, though a surface wipe before gluing remains cheap, sensible insurance. It takes a very high polish with minimal filler, and the figure itself does most of the visual work — a straightforward oil or lacquer finish over well-prepared wood is usually all a piece needs.

Ziricote is rated very durable, though that's essentially a footnote — almost nobody chooses this species anywhere durability is the deciding factor. The checking risk, managed rather than eliminated
Even with careful buying and end-sealing, ziricote carries more inherent seasoning risk than a plainer, less figured tropical hardwood — the same internal grain structure responsible for the spider-webbing pattern creates uneven internal stress as moisture leaves the wood. Builders who work with it regularly generally accept a certain rate of loss on figured sets as a cost of using the species at all, rather than expecting to eliminate the risk entirely.

Does buying ziricote directly from a supplier who's already resawn and checked the set for hairline cracks cost more than buying a raw board and resawing it yourself? Pre-checked, guitar-ready sets typically carry a real premium over raw board stock, since the supplier is absorbing the seasoning-loss risk and labour of resawing on the buyer's behalf — a builder confident in their own inspection and resawing can save money buying raw, but takes on the checking risk personally in exchange.
Is ziricote related to bocote, given how similar their names and figure sound? They're in the same genus, Cordia, and share some visual and working similarities, but they're distinct species with somewhat different figure patterns — bocote's swirl versus ziricote's spider-webbing — and different typical uses, guitar backs for ziricote versus knife scales and turnery for bocote.
How can I tell if a ziricote board already has hairline checks before I resaw it? It is a US federal government publication, it is in the public domain, and it is the reference most other woodworking sites are quietly copying. They are derived from the shrinkage figures the standard way - divide the total green-to-oven-dry shrinkage by 30, the nominal fibre saturation point - so that you can multiply width by the change in moisture content and get an answer in inches. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
