Open an aged cigar box and the smell you notice first isn't the tobacco, it's Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata) — the wood cigar boxes and humidors are traditionally lined with, and the reason isn't tradition alone, since that same aromatic resin genuinely repels the insects that would otherwise threaten stored tobacco leaf.

Not a cedar at all, and an aroma that never fully stops

Spanish cedar is actually a mahogany relative, not a true cedar botanically, though its aroma and easy working feel earned it the common name anyway. At 29 lb/ft³ and 600 lbf on the Janka scale, it works like a soft mahogany — easy, clean, and light. The one genuine complication is resin: it bleeds to the surface for years after milling, which is exactly why it's the traditional humidor lining, but it also means anything applied over an unsealed surface risks the resin interfering with the finish long after the project looked complete.

Movement, and a typical humidor-panel weight

Radial shrinkage of 4.2% against a tangential figure of 6.3% gives a 1.5 ratio, comfortably stable. Gluing and finishing around a resin that never quite stops

Freshly machining the surface immediately before gluing gives the most reliable bond, since resin exudation is the main obstacle to a clean joint — gum pockets in particular will simply refuse to bond no matter the surface prep. Sealing with shellac before any other finish is essential, not optional, or the resin will bleed through months later and ruin an otherwise finished surface. The gum pockets also clog abrasives and router bits, so expect to clean tooling more often than with a less resinous species.

A regulated genus with a generous supply picture

The entire genus Cedrela carries an Appendix II listing for its Neotropical populations, annotated #6 — paperwork attaches to logs, sawn boards, veneer, and plywood, and stops short of finished goods, so a completed humidor built from this wood is unregulated even though the lining stock that went into it wasn't. Plantation-grown supply from Central America remains genuinely plentiful, which keeps this species considerably more available than many CITES-listed tropical hardwoods.

If Spanish cedar is really a mahogany relative, does it share genuine mahogany's low, well-behaved shrinkage figures too? No — Spanish cedar's own movement numbers run higher than true mahogany's, so despite the family relationship a builder shouldn't assume mahogany-level stability just because the two woods share a genus-level lineage and a similarly easy working feel.

Does the resin smell in a finished Spanish cedar piece eventually stop being detectable to the person who built it, even if a new owner still notices it? That's a real, well-documented phenomenon with strong, persistent scents generally — prolonged exposure causes olfactory fatigue in the builder long before the aroma has actually faded, so a maker's own sense that "it's not that strong anymore" isn't a reliable guide to what a new owner will smell.

Does Spanish cedar's insect resistance hold up as well in a humid coastal climate as it does in a dry one? The resistance comes from the wood's own chemistry rather than climate-dependent surface protection, so it holds up comparably in humid conditions, though any exterior wood — resistant or not — still benefits from the same moisture-management detailing a humid coastal build generally demands.

Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
