Pecan (Carya illinoinensis) belongs to the hickory genus, but flooring buyers who want hickory's hardness without hickory's movement problems reach for this species specifically — it gives up almost nothing on the Janka scale while behaving considerably better across a wide board.
Nearly as hard, meaningfully more stable
At 46 lb/ft³ and 1,820 lbf on the Janka scale, pecan sits just below shagbark hickory's 1,880 lbf — close enough that the working feel at the bench is nearly identical, including the need for a slow, cool feed rate to avoid burning and the same tendency to blunt carbide faster than a softer domestic species. Where pecan actually separates from its rougher-and-tougher cousin is stability: its radial shrinkage runs two full percentage points lower than shagbark's, a meaningful difference on any wide panel.
The movement numbers that make pecan the better flooring hickory
Radial shrinkage of 4.9% against a tangential figure of 8.9% gives a 1.8 ratio, and the lower absolute numbers translate directly into calmer behaviour in service. Working pecan's dense, shock-resistant grain
Gluing gives no particular trouble given proper surface preparation — flat, cleanly jointed faces matter more here than on a softer wood, simply because the density makes any gap harder for the adhesive to bridge. Like shagbark hickory, pecan carries a sharp contrast between pale sapwood and darker heartwood, and it sands to a smooth, hard surface that holds a film finish well without any special preparation.
Durability, cost, and its main markets
Pecan has no decay resistance and, like the true hickories, is a favourite target of powderpost beetles in storage — stack and monitor it the same way. At roughly $7 per board foot it's priced the same as shagbark hickory in most yards, despite the meaningfully better stability, since the two species are frequently sold under a shared "hickory" grade rather than separated by name. Flooring, cabinetry, furniture, tool handles, and veneer are its main uses — flooring in particular is where pecan's stability advantage over shagbark actually shows up in a buyer's decision.
Why a flooring buyer picks pecan over shagbark
For a struck tool handle, shagbark hickory's slightly greater shock resistance is worth its wider movement and rougher machining. For a floor, a cabinet carcass, or any application where a wide glued panel needs to stay flat, pecan's lower shrinkage — without giving up much hardness at all — makes it the more sensible choice of the two hickories, and it's why "pecan hickory" flooring is a recognized, separately marketed product rather than just a substitute when shagbark is unavailable.

Is pecan flooring actually a different product from "hickory" flooring, or is it the same thing? They're related but genuinely distinct species with different movement behaviour; some flooring is sold generically as "hickory" and may blend species, so a buyer who specifically wants pecan's better stability should ask which species is actually in the box.
Does pecan wood come from the same trees that produce pecan nuts for eating? Yes — it's the same species, and lumber-grade pecan is typically harvested from older orchard trees past peak nut production or from wild-growing pecan outside orchard cultivation.
Is pecan hard enough to resist dents from dropped kitchen items on a countertop? At 1,820 lbf it's among the hardest domestic species available for that use, comparable to shagbark hickory and well above oak or maple, though nothing is fully dent-proof against a hard, sharp-edged impact.

It is a US federal government publication, it is in the public domain, and it is the reference most other woodworking sites are quietly copying. They are derived from the shrinkage figures the standard way - divide the total green-to-oven-dry shrinkage by 30, the nominal fibre saturation point - so that you can multiply width by the change in moisture content and get an answer in inches. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
