No two macassar ebony (Diospyros celebica) boards ever match — the striped figure runs from jet black to warm brown in a pattern that's genuinely unpredictable from one piece to the next, which is exactly why bookmatching a set for a guitar back or a cabinet door is treated as essential rather than optional with this species.
The better-behaved of the two commercial ebonies
At 70 lb/ft³ and 3,220 lbf on the Janka scale, macassar ebony is even denser than gaboon ebony, but it seasons considerably better — 14.2% volumetric shrinkage against gaboon's 20% is a real, practical difference that makes macassar noticeably less prone to the catastrophic end-checking gaboon ebony demands such careful handling to avoid. It's still dense enough that a dull blade will burnish the surface rather than cut it cleanly, and it's oily enough to load an abrasive quickly.
Movement, and what a fingerboard blank weighs
Radial shrinkage of 5.4% against a tangential figure of 8.8% gives a 1.6 ratio — higher than katalox's, which is one more reason bookmatched macassar panels are glued up and sealed promptly rather than left to acclimate loose for weeks. A 4"-wide blank seasoning from 9% down to a dry 6% loses about 0.035" (0.9mm) across its width; run other widths through the wood movement calculator. Gluing an oily surface, and letting the stripe do the work
Degreasing before gluing matters just as much here as with gaboon ebony — epoxy is the safer structural choice. Finishing needs almost nothing: it polishes without any filler at all, and oil deepens the brown bands specifically while leaving the black bands largely unchanged, which increases the contrast that makes this wood worth its price in the first place.
Durability, cost, and a market where botanical sourcing matters
The heartwood is very durable. At roughly $110 per board foot, macassar ebony sits just below gaboon ebony in price, among the most expensive species this site tracks either way. Veneer and marquetry, guitar fingerboards, luxury cabinetry, knife handles, and turnery round out its markets. It carries an IUCN Vulnerable rating and is not CITES-listed, though Indonesian export of this species is regulated domestically, which is worth knowing for anyone importing it directly rather than through an established international supplier.
Choosing between the two ebonies
For a buyer who specifically wants uniform, solid black colour, gaboon ebony is the more traditional choice, though it demands considerably more careful seasoning. For a buyer who wants the dramatic striped figure and somewhat more forgiving drying behaviour, macassar ebony is the better fit — the two species serve genuinely different aesthetic goals within the same broad "ebony" category, not just a price-tier distinction.

Does macassar ebony's better seasoning behaviour mean it's actually easier to work overall than gaboon ebony? Not once it's dry — the two are comparably demanding at the bench, both dulling edges fast and needing careful gluing and finishing; macassar's advantage is specifically in surviving the drying process with fewer losses, not in being a gentler wood to machine.
Should a buyer request to see the specific log a board came from before committing to a large macassar ebony order? It's a reasonable ask for a genuinely large project — since figure varies even within a single board, seeing a representative sample from the actual log being sold, rather than a stock photo, is the only reliable way to judge what a bookmatched set from that log will actually look like.
Does buying macassar ebony through an established international supplier add meaningfully to the price compared to sourcing it directly from Indonesia? It typically does add some margin, but that premium buys compliance handling for Indonesia's domestic export regulation and a documented supply chain — for most buyers outside the trade, that's a worthwhile trade against the legal and logistical risk of importing directly.
Why is macassar ebony so much more expensive than most other dense hardwoods? The combination of its striking, unrepeatable striped figure, very high density, and a genuinely limited natural range drives the price — buyers are paying for a specific, non-reproducible visual pattern as much as for the wood's physical properties.

Where these figures come fromShrinkage figures on this page come from the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook (General Technical Report FPL-GTR-190, 2010) - Table 4-3 for North American species and Table 4-4 for imported ones. It is a US federal government publication, it is in the public domain, and it is the reference most other woodworking sites are quietly copying. For the handful of woods those tables do not cover, we use The Wood Database, which reproduces the same FPL figures species by species; every entry says which source its numbers came from. The movement coefficients are not a separate measurement. They are derived from the shrinkage figures the standard way - divide the total green-to-oven-dry shrinkage by 30, the nominal fibre saturation point - so that you can multiply width by the change in moisture content and get an answer in inches. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
