Every pencil you've ever sharpened was very likely incense cedar (Calocedrus decurrens), chosen for one specific and unglamorous reason: it sharpens cleanly in any direction without splintering, which matters enormously when a machine is shaving a wooden casing around a graphite core millions of times a day.

Soft, straight, and defined by how it fails, not how it holds up

At 24 lb/ft³ and 470 lbf on the Janka scale, incense cedar is one of the softest and lightest domestic softwoods this site tracks. It's brittle as much as it is soft, which is exactly the combination pencil manufacturing wants — a wood that cuts cleanly across the grain rather than crushing or tearing — but that same brittleness makes it poor for anything structural, since it simply doesn't have the toughness a framing or furniture application needs.

Modest movement, in keeping with its overall character

Tangential shrinkage of 5.2% against a radial figure of 3.3% gives a 1.6 ratio, comfortably stable — one reason a pencil casing keeps its precise round section instead of going oval as humidity swings through a season. Scaled up to an 8"-wide board seasoning from a wet 13% down to a drier 7%, that same coefficient predicts a loss of about 0.083" (2.1mm) across the width; the wood movement calculator covers other widths. Gluing carefully, and a distinctive decay-based product

Gluing works fine, though the brittle fibres tear out if a joint is over-clamped — a lighter touch than a tougher softwood needs. Like baldcypress, incense cedar has its own deliberately marketed decay-pocket product: "pecky" incense cedar, riddled with fungal rot pockets, is sold as a textured siding feature rather than rejected as substandard material. It takes stain evenly for a softwood and weathers to grey outdoors like most durable cedars do.

Durability, cost, and where it goes beyond pencils

The heartwood is durable, which is why fence posts and shingles are traditional uses alongside the famous pencil application. At roughly $6 per board foot it's priced in this site's moderate tier. Pencils, siding, fencing, closet linings, and shingles round out its markets — the closet-lining use trades on the wood's pleasant, mild aroma, a milder cousin of the scent that makes eastern redcedar a popular chest-lining wood.

A wood chosen for one property above all others

Where a project genuinely needs incense cedar's specific cross-grain cutting behaviour — pencils being the obvious industrial case, but also small carved or whittled work where clean end-grain cuts matter — nothing else quite substitutes. For general fencing, siding, or shingle work where that specific property isn't the deciding factor, western redcedar offers comparable durability with considerably more toughness.

What people actually ask about incense cedar

Did any other wood get seriously considered for pencil manufacturing before incense cedar became the industry standard? Eastern redcedar was the original American pencil wood before overharvesting thinned the resource enough that manufacturers shifted west to incense cedar in the early twentieth century, which is part of why the two species share a broadly similar aromatic reputation despite being unrelated botanically.

Does pecky incense cedar cost less than clear stock, given that it's technically weakened by rot pockets? Not necessarily — because it's marketed deliberately as a textured feature product rather than downgraded as a defect, pecky material often sells close to or even above plain clear boards in regions where the rustic look is in demand.

What's a reasonable alternative for a tool handle if incense cedar's low toughness rules it out? Shagbark hickory or white ash are the standard domestic choices where shock resistance actually matters, both offering the toughness incense cedar's brittleness can't provide, at real cost in workability compared to how easily incense cedar cuts.

Why does incense cedar's aroma fade faster on a pencil than it seems to on a cedar chest lining? A pencil's thin wooden casing exposes proportionally far more surface area to air relative to its wood volume than a solid chest panel does, so the aromatic oils near the surface deplete and evaporate faster on a pencil-scale piece than on a thicker board doing the same job over years.

The tree itself can live several centuries in the wild, with old-growth specimens documented well past 500 years, though almost none of today's pencil-grade lumber comes from timber anywhere near that age. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
