A hemlock splinter has a genuinely worse reputation than most — old-timers in barn-siding country will tell you to take one seriously, and the folklore has real substance: hemlock slivers go septic more readily than splinters from most other common softwoods, likely because of the coarse, ragged way the fibres tear.
A cheap, splintery wood defined by its ring shake
At 28 lb/ft³ and 500 lbf on the Janka scale, eastern hemlock is coarse-textured and genuinely prone to ring shake — a defect where the growth rings separate from each other inside the standing log, which shows up in a milled board as a crescent-shaped void running along the grain. Ring shake is the single biggest reason hemlock gets downgraded at the mill, and it's worth checking any board for before committing it to a project.
Movement, and a typical barn-board weight
Tangential shrinkage of 6.8% against a radial figure of 3% gives a 2.3 ratio, well over this site's movement-prone threshold — hemlock cups more than most domestic softwoods when flatsawn. Working it, and why paint wins over stain
Gluing is adequate, though the coarse surface benefits from a light sanding pass first to give the adhesive better purchase. Under stain, hemlock finishes unevenly and stripy — a straightforward reason paint is the usual answer for anything meant to look finished, since the wood's real economic virtue is being cheap and holding a nail well, not appearance.
Durability, cost, and a pest affecting the standing resource
Eastern hemlock is non-durable, but it holds a nail firmly, and that combination made it the standard barn-siding wood of the northeastern United States regardless of its lack of rot resistance — a barn board doesn't need to survive centuries, just hold together through decades of weather while occasionally being replaced. At roughly $3.50 per board foot it's among the cheapest species this site tracks. Framing and sheathing, barn boards, crates, pulp, and railroad ties round out its uses. Hemlock woolly adelgid, an invasive insect, has caused extensive mortality across the eastern range in recent decades, though the species carries no trade restriction as a result.
Set against its more refined West Coast relative
Western hemlock, grown in the Pacific Northwest, is straighter, finer-textured, and has far less ring shake than eastern hemlock — a shop that has access to both and needs a clean, presentable board reaches for the western species, while eastern hemlock remains squarely a utility and framing wood in its native range.
What people actually ask about eastern hemlock
Does western hemlock carry the same splinter reputation as eastern hemlock? Not to the same degree — western hemlock's straighter, finer texture produces a cleaner break than eastern hemlock's coarse, ragged fibre tear, so the septic-splinter folklore is specifically tied to the eastern species' rougher grain rather than to hemlock as a genus.
What exactly is "ring shake" and how do I spot it before buying a board? It's a separation between growth rings that develops inside the standing tree, visible on a cut end as a crescent-shaped gap following a ring line — inspect board ends carefully, since a shaken board can fail unexpectedly under load even if the face looks sound.
Is eastern hemlock a good choice for a workbench or shop furniture? Where these figures come fromShrinkage figures on this page come from the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook (General Technical Report FPL-GTR-190, 2010) - Table 4-3 for North American species and Table 4-4 for imported ones. It is a US federal government publication, it is in the public domain, and it is the reference most other woodworking sites are quietly copying. The movement coefficients are not a separate measurement. They are derived from the shrinkage figures the standard way - divide the total green-to-oven-dry shrinkage by 30, the nominal fibre saturation point - so that you can multiply width by the change in moisture content and get an answer in inches. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
