With Brazilian rosewood essentially closed to new commercial trade since 1992, East Indian rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia) became the working rosewood of the guitar industry almost by default — not a lesser substitute so much as the species builders actually build with today, while Brazilian rosewood lives on mostly as a legend and a legacy-stock rarity.

The rosewood you can actually buy and build with

At 53.4 lb/ft³ and 2,350 lbf on the Janka scale, East Indian rosewood is purple-brown with darker streaks, and it bends well on a hot pipe while machining cleanly for its density. Interlocked grain tears if you try to plane it, and the fine dust genuinely gets everywhere in a shop, working its way into corners a coarser dust wouldn't reach. What sets it apart practically from cocobolo or Brazilian rosewood is that it's noticeably less oily — a real, meaningful difference that makes it a considerably more practical wood to actually build with day to day.

Movement on a full guitar-back width

Radial shrinkage of 2.7% against a tangential figure of 5.8% gives a 2.1 ratio, over this site's movement-prone threshold — worth real attention on a full-width panel despite the wood's overall reputation for good behaviour. Glue up a 16"-wide bookmatched back panel and a swing from 10% moisture content down to a dry 6% costs it about 0.124" (3.1mm) across the width; check a different width on the wood movement calculator. Gluing more reliably than its oilier relatives, and finishing traditions

Bonding is better than most rosewoods, genuinely a practical advantage over cocobolo or Brazilian rosewood, though a solvent wipe before glue-up is still cheap insurance rather than a step worth skipping. It takes French polish, oil, and lacquer all well, and pore filling is standard practice on instrument work specifically because the open pores would otherwise show through a film finish unevenly.

Durability, cost, and its dominant market position

The heartwood is very durable with good insect resistance. At roughly $45 per board foot, East Indian rosewood sits well below true Brazilian rosewood's price while still commanding a real premium over less regulated tonewoods. Guitar backs and sides, fingerboards, fine furniture, turnery, and veneer round out its markets — the fingerboard use alongside back-and-sides work makes it genuinely central to acoustic and classical guitar building at every price tier above entry-level laminate instruments.

East Indian rosewood was added to CITES Appendix II by a 2017 genus-wide decision, now read together with annotation #15 as amended at CoP19: finished musical instruments and their parts and accessories fall outside that scope entirely, as do finished goods carrying 10kg or less of the wood per shipment — but sawn boards and veneer bundles remain firmly inside the permitting requirement. Does East Indian rosewood's price track Brazilian rosewood's scarcity, or does it move independently based on its own supply? It moves largely on its own supply and demand — Brazilian rosewood's extreme scarcity affects only the tiny legacy-stock market for that specific wood, while East Indian rosewood pricing responds to its own CITES-regulated harvest volumes and broader guitar-industry demand.

Does that same finished-instrument exemption apply to a spare East Indian rosewood bridge or a replacement fingerboard blank bought separately from the guitar? No — a standalone replacement part sold on its own, not attached to or accompanying a finished instrument, is treated as raw sawn material under the regulation, so it still needs the documentation a completed guitar itself is exempt from.

Why does East Indian rosewood dust seem to spread everywhere in the shop compared to other hardwoods? Its particularly fine dust particle size, combined with typical shop airflow, lets it travel and settle further than coarser sawdust — good dust collection at the source and regular shop cleanup both matter more with this species than with a coarser-cutting wood.

Where these figures come fromShrinkage figures on this page come from the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook (General Technical Report FPL-GTR-190, 2010) - Table 4-3 for North American species and Table 4-4 for imported ones. It is a US federal government publication, it is in the public domain, and it is the reference most other woodworking sites are quietly copying. For the handful of woods those tables do not cover, we use The Wood Database, which reproduces the same FPL figures species by species; every entry says which source its numbers came from. The movement coefficients are not a separate measurement. They are derived from the shrinkage figures the standard way - divide the total green-to-oven-dry shrinkage by 30, the nominal fibre saturation point - so that you can multiply width by the change in moisture content and get an answer in inches. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
