Some turners work cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa) for a decade without incident and then, almost overnight, can no longer be in the same room as its dust — sensitisation to this species is well-documented, often permanent once it develops, and it's one of the clearest examples in the whole exotic-wood trade of a hazard that builds up with repeated exposure rather than announcing itself on the first cut.

Waxy, oily, and genuinely difficult to work around

At 68.5 lb/ft³ and 2,960 lbf on the Janka scale, cocobolo feels almost waxy in the hand, oily enough that the sensation is closer to handling a dense plastic than ordinary timber. Machining itself is a pleasure — it cuts cleanly and polishes on the lathe with nothing more than the shaving itself, no abrasive needed. The riotous mix of orange, red, and black in a fresh board oxidises toward a more uniform deep orange-brown over time.

Remarkable stability, in small working pieces

Radial shrinkage of 2.7% against a tangential figure of 4.3% gives a 1.6 ratio, and both absolute numbers are very low — 7% total volumetric shrinkage is genuinely excellent for a wood this dense. On a 3"-wide grip or handle blank, that translates to barely a hundredth of an inch, 0.013" (0.3mm), across the width for a swing from 9% moisture content down to a dry 6%; other widths run through the wood movement calculator. Among the worst-gluing woods in commerce, by design of its own chemistry

Cocobolo's extreme oil content actively defeats adhesive bonding — an acetone wipe followed by gluing within minutes, using epoxy rather than PVA, and designing genuine mechanical interlock into any joint are all standard practice rather than optional refinements. Finishing, oddly, needs almost nothing at all: a film finish struggles to cure properly on the oily surface, so wax or a friction polish is the practical route, and it's also the traditional one.

Durability, cost, and the most serious health warning on this site

Cocobolo is very durable — the same oils that defeat gluing also make it nearly rot-proof. At roughly $110 per board foot it sits among the most expensive species this site tracks. Knife and gun grips, turnery, musical instruments, jewellery boxes, and pens round out its markets. The health picture here is genuinely serious: cocobolo is one of the most notorious sensitisers in the wood trade, causing contact dermatitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma, and sensitisation is typically permanent once it develops — full extraction, gloves, and a respirator are the minimum reasonable precaution for anyone working it with any regularity.

A CITES listing with narrow, specific exemptions

Cocobolo falls under the genus-wide Dalbergia listing on Appendix II, annotation #15. Any commercial lumber import needs permits, and the exemptions are narrow: up to 10kg of the wood per shipment inside finished articles, plus finished musical instruments and their parts specifically. A box of turning blanks doesn't qualify for either exemption, so anyone importing raw cocobolo stock should confirm their supplier has handled the paperwork correctly.

What people actually ask about cocobolo

Is there any way to predict who's more likely to develop cocobolo sensitisation before it happens? No reliable predictor exists — it doesn't consistently correlate with general allergy history or reactions to other exotic woods, which is exactly what makes it unnerving: a turner with no prior wood-dust sensitivity at all can still develop it after years of apparently trouble-free exposure.

Does gluing cocobolo to a less oily wood, rather than cocobolo to cocobolo, bond any more reliably? The oil migrates from the cocobolo face regardless of what it's being joined to, so a mixed-species glue-up needs the same acetone-wipe-and-immediate-assembly discipline as an all-cocobolo joint — the other wood's own surface isn't the limiting factor.

Is cocobolo legal to buy for a hobbyist project? Yes, with proper sourcing — Appendix II listings regulate rather than ban trade, so legally permitted cocobolo moves through commerce normally, though a buyer should confirm a supplier's documentation rather than assume any available stock is automatically compliant.

It is a US federal government publication, it is in the public domain, and it is the reference most other woodworking sites are quietly copying. The movement coefficients are not a separate measurement. They are derived from the shrinkage figures the standard way - divide the total green-to-oven-dry shrinkage by 30, the nominal fibre saturation point - so that you can multiply width by the change in moisture content and get an answer in inches. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
