The living chechen (Metopium brownei) tree carries a second, far blunter name — black poisonwood — and it's earned honestly: the sap causes severe, poison-ivy-style blistering dermatitis in the Anacardiaceae family tradition, a genuine hazard during felling and green processing that has nothing to do with how the dried, finished lumber behaves.
A dense, variegated wood that calms down once it's dry
At 55 lb/ft³ and 2,400 lbf on the Janka scale, chechen is dense and variegated red-to-black, and once properly seasoned it works nicely with carbide, turning and polishing to real refinement. Interlocked grain still tears under a plane, the usual caution for a dense tropical hardwood, but nothing about worked, dried chechen carries anything close to the hazard the living tree's sap does.
Movement in a knife-handle or turning blank
Radial shrinkage of 3.8% against a tangential figure of 6.8% gives a 1.8 ratio, reasonably contained, though a knife-handle blank at this width will still show some seasonal give. Gluing and finishing, and a hazard that fades but doesn't fully vanish
A surface wipe before gluing helps bond quality on a wood that carries some natural oiliness. It buffs to a deep natural shine, rarely needing filler, and oil pushes the reds forward attractively. Dried lumber is meaningfully less reactive than the living tree's sap, but the dust remains a recorded sensitiser — treating chechen dust with real respect, not casual disregard, is the sensible position even once the wood has been cured and dried for years.

Living with a family reputation the finished wood doesn't fully carry
Chechen sits in an unusual position among exotic hardwoods: its raw material hazard (the living sap) is genuinely severe, while its worked, finished hazard (dust exposure) is real but comparatively modest — a buyer encountering only kiln-dried lumber from a reputable supplier is dealing with the milder end of that spectrum, though it's still worth knowing the fuller picture before working the species regularly.
What people actually ask about chechen
Does chechen's dust hazard fade the older and drier the lumber gets, or does a decades-old cured board carry the same risk as freshly kiln-dried stock? The main drop in reactivity happens during the initial drying and curing process itself, not gradually over years afterward — a properly dried board from last year and one dried a decade ago present a broadly similar, comparatively modest dust risk, both well below the living tree's sap.
Why does chechen's colour vary so much between boards? The wood is naturally variegated between red and black tones even within a single tree, which is part of its visual appeal for turners and furniture makers who specifically want that variation rather than a uniform colour.
Does chechen's durability hold up as well in a temperate climate as it does in its native tropical Yucatan range? The regional track record specifically reflects sustained tropical humidity and heat, so while the heartwood's own durability rating should transfer reasonably well to a temperate exterior application, a buyer outside the tropics is relying on the lab-tested durability figures more than on decades of local field experience the way a Yucatan builder can.
How does chechen compare to bloodwood or bocote for a knife-handle project? All three are dense, colourful, very durable exotics well suited to handle work; chechen's variegated red-to-black colouring and comparative affordability make it a reasonable middle choice between bloodwood's more uniform red and bocote's dramatic figured swirl.

They are derived from the shrinkage figures the standard way - divide the total green-to-oven-dry shrinkage by 30, the nominal fibre saturation point - so that you can multiply width by the change in moisture content and get an answer in inches. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
