Few species in commercial trade offer the slab width bubinga (Guibourtia spp.) does — genuinely enormous single boards, wide enough for a one-piece dining table — and that exact property is the reason it ended up regulated: a resource capable of producing trophy-width slabs draws exactly the kind of demand pressure that triggers a CITES listing.
Dense, heavy, and mildly interlocked
At 56 lb/ft³ and 2,410 lbf on the Janka scale, bubinga is dense and heavy, with mild interlock that cuts cleanly with carbide but tears under a hand plane wherever the grain gets genuinely figured. Quilted, waterfall, and pommele figure — all naturally occurring grain patterns, not artificial treatments — are the reason for the steepest pricing; plain bubinga is simply a good, hard, pinkish-brown timber without that premium.
Movement, at the scale that made bubinga famous
Radial shrinkage of 5.8% against a tangential figure of 8.4% gives a 1.4 ratio, well-behaved for a wood this dense. Scale that up to a genuinely wide 28"-wide slab, close to what makes this species notable in the first place: a swing from an 11% moisture content down to a dry 6% costs nearly four-tenths of an inch, 0.392" (10mm), across the full width — a real number to build expansion allowance around on a slab table, not a rounding-error figure. Gluing plain stock, handling the occasional gum pocket
Gluing gives no particular trouble on plain, well-prepared stock; occasional gum pockets are the only real nuisance, and they're easily worked around rather than fought. It polishes to a high natural lustre with almost no filler needed, and oil deepens the red tone dramatically — a genuinely rewarding wood to finish once it's flat and clean.
Durability, cost, and a listing with a genuinely useful quirk
Bubinga's durability is moderate, with variable insect resistance depending on the specific board. It trades at roughly $30 a board foot — exotic-tier territory on this site's own scale. Furniture slabs, drum shells, guitar bodies, turnery, and veneer round out its markets. Three specific bubinga species — Guibourtia demeusei, G. pellegriniana, and G. tessmannii — carry an Appendix II listing under annotation #15, which has a genuinely useful exemption: finished items containing up to 10kg of the listed wood per shipment move without CITES paperwork, while raw lumber does not. Other Guibourtia species sold under the same "bubinga" trade name aren't listed at all, so the botanical name on an invoice is what actually determines the paperwork required.
What the width actually buys a furniture maker
A single bubinga slab wide enough to need no glue-up at all is a genuinely different design proposition than a glued-up top from narrower boards — no seam lines, no colour-matching challenge between boards, and a continuous grain pattern across the full width. That's specifically what the premium buys, on top of the wood's own working and durability properties.
What people actually ask about bubinga
Why is bubinga sometimes called African rosewood if it's not a true rosewood? The trade name reflects a loose resemblance in colour and density to true Dalbergia rosewoods rather than any close botanical relationship — bubinga belongs to a different genus entirely, which is also why it isn't swept into the CITES-wide Dalbergia restrictions the way true rosewoods are.
Does buying an unlisted Guibourtia species instead of one of the three CITES-listed bubinga species mean giving up the wide-slab figure the wood is known for? Not necessarily — several unlisted Guibourtia species share broadly similar density and figure potential, so a buyer prioritising avoiding the extra paperwork over sourcing one exact botanical species can often still get comparable wide, figured slabs from a supplier who tracks which Guibourtia species is actually in stock.
Is a single-slab bubinga table actually more stable than a glued-up top of the same width? Not necessarily — a single wide slab moves as one continuous piece and needs the full calculated expansion allowance across its entire width, whereas a glued-up top of narrower boards, if built correctly, can sometimes better distribute that movement across multiple joint lines.

Where these figures come fromShrinkage figures on this page come from the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook (General Technical Report FPL-GTR-190, 2010) - Table 4-3 for North American species and Table 4-4 for imported ones. It is a US federal government publication, it is in the public domain, and it is the reference most other woodworking sites are quietly copying. For the handful of woods those tables do not cover, we use The Wood Database, which reproduces the same FPL figures species by species; every entry says which source its numbers came from. The movement coefficients are not a separate measurement. They are derived from the shrinkage figures the standard way - divide the total green-to-oven-dry shrinkage by 30, the nominal fibre saturation point - so that you can multiply width by the change in moisture content and get an answer in inches. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.

CITES appendix and annotation statements on this site were read directly from the CITES Appendices I, II and III valid from 5 March 2026 - the text that entered into force after the 20th Conference of the Parties (CoP20, Samarkand, 24 November to 5 December 2025) - at https://cites.org/eng/app/appendices.php. Annotation #17 adds transformed wood, meaning continuously shaped stock such as mouldings and flooring.
