The swirling, zebra-striped pattern that makes bocote (Cordia spp.) worth its price isn't a fixed property of the species — it's a function of exactly where in the tree a board came from, with the most dramatic "partridge-eye" swirl figure showing up specifically near a branch collar, where growth patterns twist around the point of attachment.
Waxy in the hand, dense enough to demand carbide
At 53 lb/ft³ and 2,010 lbf on the Janka scale, bocote feels waxy to the touch and is dense enough that carbide tooling is genuinely necessary rather than merely preferred. It turns beautifully and polishes almost without abrasive, one of several dense, oily exotics on this site that reward the lathe more than the hand plane.
Movement in a knife-scale or pen-blank piece
Radial shrinkage of 4% against a tangential figure of 7.4% gives a 1.9 ratio, just under this site's movement-prone threshold — not that it matters much on the knife scales and pen blanks bocote is usually sold for. Gluing an oily surface, and a colour that softens with time
The natural oils interfere with straightforward gluing, so an acetone wipe followed by prompt assembly gives a more reliable result than trusting the surface as-is. On the lathe it polishes to a natural gloss with barely any abrasive step needed, and film finishes cure slowly on the oily surface, which is part of why so much bocote work ends up finished on the lathe itself rather than sprayed afterward. The dramatic contrast between the yellow and black bands softens as the wood darkens toward brown with age — expected, not a defect.
Durability, cost, and the price a swirl commands
Bocote is rated very durable, and at roughly $30 per board foot it's priced with this site's exotic-tier woods. Knife scales and gun grips, turnery, furniture accents, inlay, and pens round out its markets — nearly every one chosen specifically for the figure, the same way zebrawood and leopardwood are, though bocote's swirl pattern is location-dependent within the tree rather than cut-dependent the way zebrawood's stripe is.
Choosing bocote deliberately for a project
Because the most dramatic figure concentrates near branch collars and other growth irregularities, a buyer specifically chasing bocote's signature swirl should ask a supplier about board selection rather than accepting whatever's in a standard bundle — plainer sections of the same tree exist and cost less, but they don't deliver the look most buyers are actually paying for.
What people actually ask about bocote
Does a heavily figured bocote board with lots of swirl actually cost more than a plainer board of the same dimensions? Yes, generally — suppliers who sort inventory by figure intensity price the dramatic swirl material at a premium over plainer sections from the same log, since the figure is exactly what most buyers are paying extra for over a comparably dense, working-equivalent hardwood.
Is bocote related to true rosewood, given how it's sometimes marketed? No — "Mexican rosewood" is a misnomer sometimes applied to bocote, but it's botanically unrelated to true Dalbergia rosewoods, which also means it isn't swept into the CITES-wide Dalbergia restrictions those species carry.
If a flat panel of bocote (not a turned piece) needs a film finish for a tabletop, is there any way to get a reliable cure? A thorough solvent wipe immediately before each coat, combined with a slower-curing, more solvent-tolerant finish like a catalyzed lacquer or two-part epoxy topcoat rather than a standard oil-modified varnish, gives noticeably better results than a straight film finish applied over an untreated oily surface.
Is bocote a good choice for a first project working with dense exotic hardwoods? It's a reasonable, if pricey, choice — the working difficulty is comparable to other dense oily exotics rather than unusually severe, and the dramatic figure gives a rewarding, visually striking result even for someone still building experience with carbide tooling and finishing oily surfaces.

Where these figures come fromShrinkage figures on this page come from the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook (General Technical Report FPL-GTR-190, 2010) - Table 4-3 for North American species and Table 4-4 for imported ones. It is a US federal government publication, it is in the public domain, and it is the reference most other woodworking sites are quietly copying. They are derived from the shrinkage figures the standard way - divide the total green-to-oven-dry shrinkage by 30, the nominal fibre saturation point - so that you can multiply width by the change in moisture content and get an answer in inches. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
