The American chestnut (Castanea dentata) you can actually buy today did not come from a living tree cut for lumber — it came from a barn, a factory floor, or a fence line, salvaged decades after a fungal blight functionally wiped the species out of the eastern forest canopy by the 1940s. Every board is, in a real sense, a historical artifact before it's a building material.
A stable, easy wood with a hidden hazard
At 30 lb/ft³ and a Janka of just 540 lbf, chestnut is light, soft, and open-pored — and startlingly stable for how easy it is to cut, a combination that made it a favored framing and furniture wood before the blight arrived. The catch with today's supply is entirely about sourcing, not the wood's own properties: reclaimed stock routinely hides embedded grit, old nails, and staples, so every board needs a pass with a metal detector before it goes anywhere near a jointer knife, let alone a planer.
Movement, and what a reclaimed panel actually weighs
Tangential shrinkage of 6.7% against a radial figure of 3.4% gives a tangential:radial ratio of 2.0 — right at this site's movement-prone threshold, so a wide flatsawn panel deserves the same expansion planning you'd give white oak. Working reclaimed stock, and the appeal of "wormy" boards
Once a board is confirmed clean of metal, it bonds well and machines easily, though reclaimed material often needs a fresh skim cut across both faces before glue-up because decades of surface weathering and old finish leave the wood unsuitable to bond as-is. The insect galleries that give "wormy chestnut" its name and its market appeal are the same galleries that make individual boards structurally unpredictable — a heavily tunnelled section can be surprisingly weak even though the surrounding wood tests sound, so load-bearing use of character-grade wormy stock deserves real caution.

The genuinely durable heartwood is the reason so much chestnut barn framing and fencing survived long enough to be worth salvaging generations after the blight — this is not a fragile wood, just a functionally extinct one as a standing timber resource.

At roughly $16 per board foot, chestnut carries a premium that has nothing to do with working properties and everything to do with scarcity — every board is either standing-dead salvage, structural reclamation from a demolished building, or barn-stock "wormy chestnut" sold specifically for its insect-gallery character. Reclaimed panelling, period restoration work, picture frames, rustic furniture, and — historically — coffins are the main current markets, with restoration work commanding the highest premiums for boards that can be matched to existing historic material.

Is American chestnut actually extinct, or can I still buy freshly cut lumber? The species survives as root sprouts and small trees across its former range, and breeding programs are working toward blight-resistant hybrids, but no commercial timber harvest of mature American chestnut has existed since the mid-20th century — everything on the market is reclaimed or salvage.
If a project needs load-bearing chestnut, should "wormy" boards be avoided entirely, or is it a case-by-case inspection? Case by case is more realistic than a blanket rule — a board with light, scattered tunnelling away from a structural span is often fine, while heavy concentrated galleries in a critical load path are a genuine risk, so a buyer sourcing wormy chestnut for anything structural should inspect and reject individual boards rather than trusting the grade name alone.
Is it safe to use reclaimed chestnut for a kitchen surface or tabletop? Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
