Northwest Coast carvers working on a totem pole or a ceremonial mask reach for Alaska yellow cedar (Cupressus nootkatensis) almost exclusively, and the giveaway that you're in a shop working this species is the smell — it releases a sharp, distinctive raw-potato odour under the knife that no other North American cedar produces.

The finest-textured and hardest of the true cedars

At 31 lb/ft³ and 580 lbf on the Janka scale, yellow cedar is denser and harder than western redcedar, and its texture is fine and uniform enough that a chisel behaves identically regardless of which direction you cut relative to the grain — a genuinely rare property that makes it the standout carving softwood on the continent. It holds a knife-cut edge cleanly without the crumbling a coarser softwood shows on fine detail.

Stable enough to carry outdoor detail without protection

Tangential shrinkage of 6% against a radial figure of 2.8% gives a 2.1 ratio, slightly over this site's movement-prone line, though the low absolute numbers keep the practical effect modest. On an 8"-wide carving blank, that shows up as about 0.096" (2.4mm) of movement across the width for a swing from 12% moisture content down to a dry 6%; different blank widths run through the wood movement calculator. Working it, and a real occupational hazard worth naming

Yellow cedar bonds reliably and is less resinous than most softwoods, which helps both gluing and finishing go smoothly — it takes finish evenly, and left bare outdoors it silvers gracefully rather than degrading structurally the way a less durable softwood would. The genuine caution here isn't working difficulty, it's dust: carvers commonly report headaches from prolonged exposure, and the species is a recorded respiratory irritant and sensitiser, so ventilation and a mask matter more with this wood than with most other cedars.

Durability, cost, and a resource under real pressure

Yellow cedar's heartwood is durable to very durable — one of the few softwoods genuinely worth using unprotected outdoors long-term, which is exactly why it works for exterior joinery, boat decking, and saunas as well as carving. At roughly $11 per board foot it's priced in this site's moderate tier. Widespread yellow-cedar decline across Alaska, linked to reduced snowpack that leaves shallow tree roots exposed to freeze damage, has been reducing the standing resource, though the species carries no trade restriction.

Why carvers specifically choose it over other cedars

Against western redcedar, the more commonly available and considerably cheaper cedar on this site, yellow cedar's finer, more uniform texture and greater hardness are exactly what fine carved detail needs — western redcedar splits and crumbles more readily on delicate cuts, which is why it dominates siding and shingles while yellow cedar dominates carving.

Why does yellow cedar smell so different from other cedars when cut? Its aromatic compounds are chemically distinct from the cedrol-dominant scent of western redcedar or the more generic "cedar" smell most people expect, producing that sharp, raw-potato-like odour that's actually a reliable identification cue at the bench.

Are there conservation or replanting efforts underway to offset Alaska yellow cedar's decline, or is the resource just expected to keep shrinking? Forest researchers are studying which stands sit in more snow-secure microclimates as candidates for assisted regeneration, but there's no large-scale replanting program comparable to the chestnut or sugar-pine breeding efforts, since the die-off is tied to a climate pattern rather than a single treatable pest or disease.

Does yellow cedar need any different fastener choice than a typical softwood when used unfinished outdoors long-term? Stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized fasteners are the safer choice for the same reason they matter on western redcedar — the wood's own durability-conferring extractives can corrode plain steel over years of exposure, an interaction plain structural pine or fir doesn't present.

Where these figures come fromShrinkage figures on this page come from the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook (General Technical Report FPL-GTR-190, 2010) - Table 4-3 for North American species and Table 4-4 for imported ones. It is a US federal government publication, it is in the public domain, and it is the reference most other woodworking sites are quietly copying. They are derived from the shrinkage figures the standard way - divide the total green-to-oven-dry shrinkage by 30, the nominal fibre saturation point - so that you can multiply width by the change in moisture content and get an answer in inches. Two honest limits are worth knowing. Shrinkage is not perfectly linear with moisture content, and the fibre saturation point is not exactly 30% for every species; it runs from about 26% to about 34%. And every figure here is a species average drawn from tested samples, while the board on your bench is one tree from one site. Use these numbers to size an expansion gap or choose between two woods, not to predict a specific board to the thousandth.
