Nominal Vs Actual 2x6
Swap the nominal 2 by 6 inches for the real 1.5 by 5.5, and a joist's on-edge stiffness drops to about 58% of what the label implies — a real 1.73x gap.
A nominal 2x6 measures 1.5" x 5.5" actual, the same 3/4" total thickness loss every piece of S4S dimensional lumber takes off its nominal number — but on a 2x6 that loss lands on the one dimension a joist or deck board actually leans on to resist bending, which makes this size worth treating separately from a 2x4.
Why the 2x6 case is different from a stud
A 2x4 in a wall is loaded mostly in compression, straight down its length — the exact width of its face matters less than whether it's there at all. A 2x6 used as a joist or a deck beam is loaded on edge, spanning between supports, and the stiffness that resists it sagging under load is governed by its depth cubed, not just its cross-sectional area. Run the numbers: a true, un-planed 2 x 6 on edge would have a section moment of inertia of 36.0 in⁴; the real, surfaced 1.5" x 5.5" section has 20.80 in⁴ — the actual board is only about 58% as stiff as the nominal number implies, a factor of roughly 1.73x between what "2x6" suggests and what the wood actually resists with. Every published span table for joists and deck framing is built from the real 1.5" x 5.5" section for exactly this reason; a span table has never once used the nominal number, because a floor built to the nominal figure would sag well past what anyone would call structurally sound.

Notice the width loss shrinks as a percentage the wider the board gets — a 2x6 loses 8.3% of its nominal width (6" down to 5.5"), while a 2x4 loses 12.5% (4" down to 3.5"). Where this shows up in a real project
- Deck joist and beam spans. Span calculators and prescriptive deck tables (species, grade, spacing, and load all matter) are keyed to 1.5" x 5.5", never "2 inches by 6 inches" — if you're cross-checking a table against your own material, measure the actual stock, don't trust the label.
- Board-foot and cost math. Run the true dimension through the board foot calculator for a 10' 2x6 and you get 6.875 board feet — the naive 2"x6"x10' calculation would claim 10 board feet, overstating the true volume by 45%.
- Fastening and joinery. A dado or ledger notch sized to "fit a 2x6" needs to be cut to 1.5" thick, and any bearing surface calculation (a birdsmouth notch on a rafter, for instance — see

Species matters more here than on a stud
Because a 2x6 is so often chosen for its stiffness rather than just its bulk, species selection compounds with the dimension. A common decking-specific wrinkle
Composite and PT (pressure-treated) decking sold as "2x6" doesn't always follow the same S4S dimensional-lumber standard this page describes. Pressure-treated 2x6 decking is typically the same 1.5" x 5.5" actual size as any other dimensional lumber, but some composite decking brands mill their boards to a proprietary actual width that's neither 5.5" nor a round metric figure, specifically to discourage mixing brands mid-deck. If a project mixes real dimensional lumber joists with composite decking boards, confirm both actual sizes independently rather than assuming they match just because both are labeled "2x6" or "6-inch" — the framing member and the decking surface are answering to two different manufacturing standards even when the tags look the same.
