Hardwood Lumber Grading

NHLA's top FAS grade needs roughly 83.3% clear cuttings on a board's poorer face at 6 inches wide and 8 feet long — nothing in the grade concerns color at all.

Hardwood lumber grading, standardized by the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA), rates a board almost entirely on how much clear, defect-free material can be cut from it — not on species, not on color, and not on how the board looks as a whole, which surprises buyers used to softwood's more visual "select vs. common" framing.

The core NHLA grades, high to low

FAS ("First and Seconds") is the top standard grade, requiring boards at least 6" wide and 8' long with roughly 83.3% of the board's surface yielding clear cuttings on the poorer of the two faces — the highest bar in common commercial use, typically reserved for the best material in a given log run. FAS 1 Face relaxes the standard so only the better face needs to meet the FAS clear-cutting requirement, letting the reverse face carry more defect, which produces usable material at a lower cost for projects where only one face will show. Selects cover boards too narrow or short to qualify for FAS but which still meet FAS's face-quality standard on the better face at a smaller minimum size. No. 1 Common drops the clear-cutting requirement to roughly 66.7%, and No. 2A Common drops it further, to around 50% — both still fully usable grades, just requiring more cutting around defects to yield finished parts, and correspondingly priced lower per board foot.

Why the percentage-clear system exists

A furniture maker crosscuts and rips boards into parts anyway, so what matters commercially isn't whether a board looks perfect as a single piece — it's how much genuinely clear, usable material a buyer can expect to extract per board foot purchased. The NHLA system essentially pre-calculates that yield expectation and prices accordingly, which is why a lower grade isn't "worse wood" in a species or strength sense, just wood that costs more labor-per-usable-board-foot to break down around its defects.

Reading a grade stamp or listing in practice

A listing showing "4/4 FAS Walnut" is describing rough thickness (per /reference/rough-lumber-quarter-system/) and NHLA grade together, two independent specifications — thickness says how much material you're buying, grade says how much of it you can expect to use clear. Buying a lower grade deliberately, for parts where some figure or minor character is acceptable or even desirable (rustic work, parts that will be painted, short crosscut pieces where a knot falls outside the cutting), is a legitimate cost-saving choice rather than a compromise, provided the project and grade are matched intentionally.

How this differs from softwood grading

Softwood dimensional lumber uses a structural-first grading system (/reference/softwood-lumber-grading/) built around strength and straightness for framing use, not clear-cutting yield — the two systems measure genuinely different things because they're serving genuinely different buyers: a framer needs known load capacity, a furniture maker needs known clear-material yield. Don't expect a softwood grade stamp's letters and numbers to map onto NHLA's FAS/Select/Common system at all; they're unrelated vocabularies for unrelated purposes.

Species and grade are independent, same as thickness and grade

A grade describes yield potential within a given board, not the species' inherent quality — a No. 1 Common board of an expensive, hard-to-source species is still more expensive overall than an FAS board of a common domestic species, because species scarcity and grade are two separate cost drivers that compound rather than substitute for each other.

Estimating actual usable yield from a grade

The clear-cutting percentages above describe how much of a board's face can yield defect-free cuttings, not how much of the board's total board footage you'll actually use once cutting units to specific project dimensions — real yield is almost always somewhat lower than the grade percentage alone suggests, because cutting units have to be extracted as specific rectangles, not arbitrary shapes, and a board's clear areas don't always align conveniently with the sizes a project needs. /reference/lumber-yield-and-waste-factor-guide/ covers how much additional material to plan for on top of the raw grade percentage when estimating a real project's lumber order.

Buying rough versus buying pre-selected

Grade is assessed on the rough board before any milling, which means a lower grade board can still yield a perfectly usable clear part if you're willing to do the layout work yourself, cutting around the defects the grade stamp already flagged as present. Some suppliers offer pre-selected, pre-cut "cabinet grade" or "shorts" bundles specifically for buyers who'd rather pay a premium for someone else to have already done that culling — a genuinely different value trade than buying full-length rough boards at a lower NHLA grade and doing the selection in your own shop.
