Board Foot To Square Foot Conversion
200 square feet of 5/4 decking needs 212.5 board feet — square footage tracks thickness alone, since width times length is already the covered floor area.
Square footage and board footage diverge from each other by exactly one variable: thickness. Where the linear-foot conversion (/reference/board-foot-to-linear-foot-conversion/) depends on both width and thickness, converting board feet to coverage area depends on thickness alone, because square footage doesn't care how wide any individual board is — it only cares how much surface the total material covers once it's laid down.
The formula
Square feet = board feet / thickness in inches. This falls directly out of the board-foot definition: board feet is (thickness x width x length in feet) / 12, and width x length in feet is exactly the square footage of a board laid flat — so board feet is just square feet multiplied by thickness, divided by 12... except thickness in the board-foot formula is already expressed as a fraction of the 1-inch reference thickness a board foot is built around, so the clean working relationship is simply squareFeet = boardFeet / thicknessInInches.
A worked example
200 square feet of 5/4 decking (actual surfaced thickness 1.0625"): board feet needed = 200 x 1.0625 = 212.5 board feet. Run it the other direction and a supply of 212.5 board feet of 5/4 stock covers 200 square feet — check the arithmetic against the board foot calculator using a notional 12"-wide, 200"-long reference board, since the calculator itself works from thickness/width/length rather than a direct coverage-area input.
Why this conversion matters more for some materials than others
This is the conversion decking, flooring, and paneling estimates actually run on, because those materials are bought and specified by the area they need to cover, not by an arbitrary board width — a homeowner ordering decking cares about covering a 200-square-foot deck, not about how many individual 5.5"-wide boards that takes. Furniture lumber, by contrast, is more often estimated by the linear-foot method (/reference/board-foot-to-linear-foot-conversion/) because furniture parts are usually specified by their own width and length rather than by a total area to cover.
The actual-thickness caveat applies here too
Use the real, surfaced thickness in this formula, not the nominal one — 5/4 decking's actual thickness runs closer to 1.0625" than the full 1.25" the "5/4" label suggests (see /reference/rough-lumber-quarter-system/ for the full quarter-system table), and running this conversion against the nominal figure will understate how much material a given coverage area actually needs, in the opposite direction from the dimensional-lumber nominal-vs-actual gap, which overstates volume when figured nominally. Decking specifically splits the difference: some decking is sold following the hardwood quarter convention (rough thickness before surfacing) and some follows the dimensional-lumber nominal-inch convention instead, so confirm which system a specific product uses before running either page's numbers against it.
Waste and coverage overlap
Real board coverage is never edge-to-edge with zero gap — decking needs expansion gaps between boards, flooring often has tongue-and-groove overlap that changes the effective coverage width per board, and any material needs some allowance for defect-cutting and end trimming. Sheet goods use a related but simpler version of this math
Plywood, MDF, and OSB coverage is even more direct than solid decking, because a full sheet's face dimensions (typically 48" x 96", or 32 square feet) are close to exact — see /reference/plywood-sheet-sizes-and-thickness/ for the actual thickness figures that matter for a volume calculation on sheet goods, but for a pure coverage question (how many sheets to skin a wall or a floor), the thickness of the sheet doesn't enter the math the way it does for board-foot-to-square-foot conversion on solid lumber. That's a genuinely different calculation from the one this page describes, worth not conflating just because both involve "how much area does this cover."
Why board feet exists at all if square feet is often the more natural unit
Board feet is a volume measure, which is why it works as a single unit across boards of wildly different width and length — a supplier can quote "500 board feet of walnut" without specifying exact dimensions and still be quoting a real, comparable quantity, because volume is what a sawmill actually produces and what raw material costs scale with. Square footage only becomes the more natural unit once you're past the raw-material stage and into a specific installed application with a fixed thickness, which is why decking and flooring listings often show both figures side by side — board feet or linear feet for how the material is priced and cut, square footage for how much of the job it actually covers once installed.
A quick way to sanity-check either direction
If a square-foot figure and a board-foot figure for the same order don't roughly satisfy squareFeet times actual-thickness equals boardFeet, one of the two numbers is wrong, or the "square feet" figure already includes an installation overlap/gap allowance that the raw board-foot total doesn't account for — worth checking both figures against each other before placing a material order rather than trusting either number in isolation.
