Biscuit And Domino Cutter Size Reference

Biscuits and Dominoes aren't interchangeable — biscuits run #0/#10/#20 in compressed beech, Dominoes run metric cutter widths on an entirely different system.

Biscuits and Dominoes both act as loose-tenon-style alignment and reinforcement pieces glued into matching slots cut by a dedicated tool, but they're sized on two entirely different systems — biscuits by a size number tied to a compressed-wood shape, Dominoes by a metric cutter width tied to a specific mortise geometry — and the two aren't interchangeable in either tool or slot.

Standard biscuit sizes

Biscuits come in three common sizes, numbered rather than dimensioned directly: #0, the smallest, roughly 5/8" x 1-3/4", suited to thin stock and small joints where a larger biscuit wouldn't fit within the material's width without breaking through a face; #10, roughly 3/4" x 2-1/8", the size that covers the large majority of general cabinetry and panel-glue-up joints; and #20, roughly 1" x 2-3/8", the largest common size, used where the joint is wide enough to accept it and where maximum glue surface and alignment strength matter most. All three are cut from the same compressed, football-shaped beech material, which swells slightly on contact with water-based glue to help lock the joint — the compression and swelling behavior is part of the system, not an incidental detail, and using a biscuit with a non-water-based adhesive changes how (and whether) that swelling-lock effect happens at all.

Domino cutter widths

The Domino system (a proprietary loose-tenon joiner, distinct from a biscuit joiner in both mechanism and resulting joint) uses cutter widths specified directly in millimeters rather than a size number: common cutter widths run 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, and 12/14mm, each cutting a mortise sized to accept a matching loose tenon of that width, with mortise length and depth also selectable independently of width on most machines in the system. Because the tenon is a genuine mortise-and-tenon element rather than a compressed biscuit, Domino joints generally deliver more glue surface and a more rigid mechanical connection at a comparable joint size than a biscuit does — closer in strength character to /joinery/loose-tenon-joint/ than to a biscuit's more alignment-focused role, even though both tools are commonly described as doing a similar job.

Choosing a size for the material at hand

Both systems follow the same underlying rule regardless of which sizing convention applies: the reinforcement (biscuit or tenon) should sit comfortably within the material's thickness without breaking through either face, with a reasonable margin on both sides — a #20 biscuit or a 10mm Domino tenon has no business in 1/2" stock, where either would leave dangerously little material on each face of the slot. As a rough guide, 3/4" stock comfortably accepts a #10 or #20 biscuit or a 6mm–8mm Domino tenon; thinner 1/2"–5/8" stock is better served by a #0 biscuit or a 4mm–5mm Domino tenon.

Neither system substitutes for the other mid-project

A biscuit joiner cannot cut a Domino-width mortise and a Domino machine cannot produce a biscuit-shaped slot — the two are genuinely separate tool ecosystems with no cross-compatibility, so a shop's existing tool determines which sizing table above actually applies, not project requirements alone. Mixing systems within a single project (biscuits for panel glue-ups, Dominoes for structural frame joints, for instance) is common in shops that own both tools, since the two systems suit somewhat different joint roles — biscuits primarily for alignment during glue-up with modest reinforcement, Dominoes for genuine structural loose-tenon strength — rather than being redundant with each other.

Where these sit relative to other mechanical fasteners

Slot placement and count scale with joint length, not just material thickness

Both systems space their slots along a joint's length rather than relying on a single central biscuit or tenon to carry an entire panel edge — a long panel glue-up typically gets a biscuit or Domino tenon every 6"–8" along the joint, close enough together to maintain alignment across the full length without so many that the material between adjacent slots is compromised. A short joint (a small box corner, for instance) may only need one properly sized reinforcement rather than following the same spacing rule meant for a multi-foot panel edge.

Cost and tooling investment differ meaningfully between the two systems

A biscuit joiner and its biscuits represent a comparatively low tooling cost and are widely available from multiple manufacturers using the same standardized #0/#10/#20 biscuit sizing, while the Domino system is a single-manufacturer proprietary tool with a correspondingly higher initial cost — a real practical factor in which system a given shop invests in, separate from the joint-strength comparison above, and worth weighing against how much structural loose-tenon work a shop actually does versus how much of its joinery is closer to alignment-and-light-reinforcement biscuit territory.
