A dovetail key isn't structural at all — it's an inlaid repair pulling a crack's two sides together, cut steeper than any joinery dovetail's flare ever is.

A dovetail key — also called a bowtie or butterfly key — isn't a structural joint connecting two separate pieces of furniture at all. It's an inlaid repair and reinforcement, let into a single board across a crack, a knot, or a glue seam, to keep that flaw from spreading any further.
What it's actually resisting
The key's two flared ends sit on either side of the flaw it's protecting, so any force trying to widen the crack has to pull the key's wider ends through narrower wood — the same flare-resists-pull-out mechanism a dovetail joint uses between two boards, applied instead to stop one board's own crack from opening. It is explicitly not meant to be the primary structural connection anywhere; a tabletop with a running crack needs the crack itself dealt with (relieved, glued, or accepted as a design feature) and the key is what keeps that decision permanent rather than a joint carrying real day-to-day load.
Proportions, and why they're different from a joinery dovetail
A dovetail key's flare is commonly cut steeper than the 1:6–1:8 range a structural dovetail uses — because a key isn't optimizing for long-grain glue area on a mating board's flank, it's optimizing for maximum resistance to being pulled straight out of a single recess. A key's length is typically 2 to 2.5 times its narrowest width, so a key with a 3/4" waist runs roughly 1.75"–1.9" long, wide enough at each end to genuinely brace the wood on both sides of the crack without the recess itself becoming so large it introduces a new weak point.
Depth: through or stopped, and what each choice means
A key can be let in as a through inlay (visible and identical from both faces, common where the crack itself runs through) or stopped partway into the board's thickness (visible only from one face). A through key gives slightly more glue area and is somewhat easier to fit accurately since the recess can be checked from both sides during layout; a stopped key leaves one face completely clean, which matters on furniture where only one side is ever seen.
Grain orientation, and why it fights the same movement problem a breadboard end does
The key's own grain runs along its length, bridging the crack — which means the key and the board it's let into are almost never going to expand and contract at exactly the same rate in that direction, the same mismatch a breadboard end has to accommodate with elongated pin holes. A key has no such accommodation built in; it's a small, rigid, fully glued insert. In practice this is manageable specifically because a key is small relative to the board's total width, so the absolute mismatch stays tiny even though the percentage difference in movement rate between key and board can be large — but it's part of why a key is sized conservatively (see the proportions above) rather than made larger than the crack strictly requires, since a bigger key means a bigger absolute mismatch to absorb at the glue line.
Cut sequence
- Assess the crack or flaw fully before cutting anything — a key placed too close to a crack's tip can split the wood further the moment the recess is chopped; the accepted practice is to key a few inches beyond where the crack visibly stops, into solid wood.
- Make (or buy) the key itself first, from stock at least as hard as the board being repaired — a soft key in a hard board will crush under seasonal movement long before it does any bracing work.
- Trace the key's outline onto the board, positioned to straddle the crack.
- Rout or chisel the recess to the key's exact outline and to consistent depth.
- Test-fit the key dry; it should seat with light hand pressure, not require forcing that risks widening the crack it's meant to stop.
- Glue and clamp, then pare or sand the key flush once set.
Why this shares a dovetail's geometry but not its job
It's easy to mistake a dovetail key for a small structural dovetail joint because the shape is identical — but a key never mates with a second piece of wood the way every other entry on this list does. Comparing it to, say, a through dovetail or box joint on strength terms doesn't quite make sense; the right comparison is to crack-stop hardware like a butterfly clamp or a simple cross-grain spline, both of which solve the same "stop this crack from spreading" problem with less visual presence but also less holding power once the crack is under real seasonal stress.
Why placement, not cutting, is where the real risk sits
A single key is a modest amount of careful layout and chisel work — the real cost is in getting placement right the first time, since a poorly placed key that doesn't fully span the crack's working length can end up doing nothing at all.
