Multiplying board feet by price per board foot is only the first step — the extra factors that separate a yard's price sheet from what lands on your receipt.

Lumber pricing looks simple on the surface — a dollar figure per board foot — and then falls apart in practice because the number on the yard's price sheet and the number that ends up on your receipt are answering two subtly different questions. Getting from one to the other is one extra step most estimates skip.

The base calculation

Once you know the board-foot count for a piece, converting to cost is a single multiplication:

cost = board feet x price per board foot

Why the quoted price rarely equals the final cost
