Board Feet Vs Linear Feet Vs Square Feet

Board feet, linear feet, and square feet answer different buying questions — which unit fits which material, so a price doesn't come out wrong by a real margin.

Three units get mixed up constantly on a cut list, and the mix-up is not cosmetic — pricing a run of crown moulding by the board foot instead of the linear foot, or quoting a flooring job in board feet instead of square feet, produces a number that is wrong by a real, often large margin, not just imprecise. Each unit answers a different question, and the trick is matching the question to the material being bought, not to whichever unit feels more familiar.

The three questions, and which unit answers each

  • "How much wood, by volume?" — board feet. The right unit whenever thickness varies or matters, which is most solid lumber: rough hardwood, dimensional framing stock, anything priced by the piece where a thicker board costs more per running foot than a thinner one of the same species.
  • "How much length of one fixed cross-section?" — linear feet. The right unit when the profile is already locked — baseboard, crown moulding, quarter-round, stair nosing — and the only variable left is how many feet of it you need. Thickness and width are baked into the per-foot price already, so re-deriving board feet from a moulding profile is extra work that answers a question nobody asked.
  • "How much surface, ignoring depth?" — square feet. The right unit for flooring, sheet goods laid flat, and anything sold by coverage rather than volume, where a 3/4" panel and a 1/4" panel of the same footprint cost different amounts per square foot but are still quoted in square feet because thickness is a spec, not a multiplier.

Converting between them — the part people skip

Board feet and linear feet only convert cleanly for a single, fixed cross-section. Take a run of 2x6 stock: at its actual dressed size (1.5" x 5.5"), one linear foot contains (1.5 x 5.5 x 1) / 12 = 0.688 board feet. Need 100 board feet of that exact 2x6? Divide: 100 / 0.688 ≈ 145.5 linear feet. Change the cross-section mid-calculation — mixing in some 2x8 — and the conversion breaks, because now two different volumes are hiding behind one "linear feet" total. The fix is always the same: total the board feet across every distinct size first, or keep a running linear-foot tally per cross-section, never both mixed into one number.

Board feet and square feet convert only when thickness is fixed and known, the way sheet goods work: a 4' x 8' sheet of 3/4" plywood covers 32 square feet and, treated as one large "board," contains (48 x 96 x 0.75) / 144 = 24 board feet — a real conversion, but one that only matters when comparing a sheet-good substitute against solid-lumber cost on an apples-to-apples volume basis, not for ordinary sheet-goods purchasing, which stays in square feet.

Where this actually bites a budget

A kitchen cabinet run quoted at "$8 per board foot" for the face-frame hardwood and "$4.50 per square foot" for the plywood carcase stock uses two different units in the same estimate on purpose, because the two materials are bought two different ways — hardwood by volume since thickness varies by grade, sheet stock by coverage since its thickness is a fixed spec. Forcing both into one unit to make the spreadsheet simpler is exactly how a budget goes wrong: converting the plywood into an equivalent board-foot figure to compare it against solid stock produces a number that looks precise and prices nothing correctly, because sheet goods aren't sold that way and the comparison hides the real difference in labor and waste between the two materials.

A quick decision rule

Before pricing anything, ask what the supplier's own price tag is keyed to — that answers which unit belongs in the estimate, because using a different unit than the one the price is actually quoted in just adds a conversion step that can silently introduce error. Rough and dimensional lumber: board feet. A fixed millwork profile: linear feet. Sheet goods and flooring: square feet. Run the actual numbers for a specific board through the board foot calculator once the right unit is chosen, rather than guessing which of the three a supplier meant by "foot."
