How much does this table weigh?
Table weight is knowable before a single piece is cut — a typical dining table's board-foot-to-weight arithmetic, run component by component to a real number.
Ask someone what a wood table weighs before they've lifted one solo and the guess is almost always low, by a lot — a piece that reads as "a slab of wood on four legs" doesn't look like it should fight back the way it does at the bottom of a staircase. It's a knowable number before you've cut a single piece, not a surprise you discover at the front door, and getting there just means running the same board-foot-to-weight arithmetic this site uses everywhere else, once per component, then adding it up.
The table, stated exactly
Take a genuinely typical dining table in white oak, built from a glued-up top, four square legs, and a four-piece apron:
- Top: 1" thick, 38" wide, 72" long
- Legs: four pieces, each 3" x 3" x 28"
- Long aprons: two pieces, each 1" x 4" x 62"
- Short aprons: two pieces, each 1" x 4" x 30"

Component by component
Top: 1 x 38 x 72 works out to exactly 19.0 board feet, which at 47 lb/ft³ weighs 74.42 lb on its own — the single heaviest part of the table by a wide margin, which tracks with intuition: it's the largest single mass of wood in the piece and it's what people actually grab when they try to lift one end.
Legs: each leg is 3 x 3 x 28, which is 1.75 board feet apiece — 7.0 board feet for all four — weighing 27.42 lb total, or a little under 7 lb per leg.
Aprons: the two long aprons (1 x 4 x 62) come to 1.7222 board feet each, 3.4444 total; the two short aprons (1 x 4 x 30) add 0.8333 board feet each, 1.6667 total. Combined, the apron assembly is 5.1111 board feet and 20.02 lb.
The total
Add the three groups together: 19.0 + 7.0 + 5.1111 = 31.11 board feet of white oak in the whole table, weighing 121.85 lb as bare, unfinished lumber. Why the weight distribution matters more than the total
