Board feet, explained properly (and why the lumberyard's number differs)

One board foot is 144 cubic inches, not a linear measurement in disguise — the precise definition, and why a lumberyard receipt so often surprises people.

Ask five people at a lumberyard what a board foot is and you'll get five confident, slightly different answers — and at least one of them will be counting something other than what the invoice actually charges for. Here's the arithmetic, done properly, and why the number on your receipt so often doesn't match what you expected walking in.

The definition, precisely

One board foot is a volume: 144 cubic inches of wood, equivalent to a piece 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long. That's it — it's a unit of volume dressed up to look like a simple linear measurement, which is exactly where the confusion starts. A board foot is not one foot of board length regardless of width or thickness, and it is not the same thing as a square foot of surface area (which ignores thickness entirely and would treat a 1/4" veneer sheet the same as a 2"-thick slab).

The formula, worked from that definition:

board feet = (thickness in inches x width in inches x length in inches) / 144

or, if you're working in feet for length (the more common lumberyard convention):

board feet = (thickness in inches x width in inches x length in feet) / 12

Both formulas give the identical answer for the same piece — they're the same equation with the length unit converted, not two different rules. Run either one through the board foot calculator on this site and you'll see them agree to the last decimal.

A worked example

Take a piece of lumber 1" thick, 8" wide, and 6 feet long. Using the feet formula: (1 x 8 x 6) / 12 = 4 board feet. Using the inches formula with the length converted to 72": (1 x 8 x 72) / 144 = 4 board feet. Same answer, because they have to be — it's the same 576 cubic inches of wood measured two ways.

Now double the thickness to 2" and keep everything else the same: (2 x 8 x 6) / 12 = 8 board feet — exactly double, because board feet scale linearly with each dimension. This is the single most useful intuition to carry forward: doubling any one dimension doubles the board-foot count, and that relationship holds regardless of which dimension you change.

Why the lumberyard's number so often differs from a quick mental estimate

Three things routinely throw off a back-of-envelope board-foot guess, and all three are avoidable once you know to look for them:

1. Nominal versus actual dimensions. A board sold as "1x8" does not measure a true 1" x 8" — surfaced dimensional and rough hardwood stock both lose real material to drying and planing. A rough hardwood board described as "4/4" (four-quarters, meaning 1" rough) commonly finishes around 13/16" after two-sided surfacing. If you compute board feet from the nominal number instead of the actual, measured thickness and width, you'll overstate the true volume — sometimes by 10% or more — because the lumberyard is charging (correctly) for the actual dimension, not the nominal label. 2. Rough stock is measured before it's surfaced flat. Many hardwood yards price board feet off the rough-sawn dimension, before the board goes through a planer at all — meaning the board feet on the tag reflect material that will shrink further once it's dressed to a clean, usable thickness. This isn't a trick; it's the honest convention for selling material that a woodworker will finish-mill themselves, but it does mean the finished piece you end up with contains fewer board feet than you paid for, because some of what you bought left the shop as shavings.

3. Width is measured, not assumed. Hardwood boards are frequently sold at their actual, individual width — no two boards in a stack are necessarily the same width — and yards typically round each board's width to the nearest inch when tallying board feet, which means the tally is a real per-board sum, not a single width applied across a whole stack. Buying "10 board feet of 6" oak" and expecting ten identical 6"-wide boards is a common and understandable misreading of how hardwood is actually priced.

Board feet vs. linear feet vs. square feet — pick the right unit for the job

These three units answer three different questions, and using the wrong one is the single most common lumber-math mistake:

  • Board feet answer "how much wood, by volume, am I buying or using" — the right unit for pricing rough or dimensional lumber where thickness varies.
  • Linear feet answer "how much length of a single, fixed cross-section do I need" — the right unit for trim, molding, or dimensional lumber sold at one standard size where thickness and width are already fixed and only length varies.
  • Square feet answer "how much surface area am I covering" — the right unit for flooring, sheet goods, and veneer, where thickness either doesn't vary or genuinely doesn't matter to the question being asked.

Mixing them up produces genuinely wrong numbers, not just imprecise ones: pricing crown molding by the board foot when the yard sells it by the linear foot at a fixed profile, for instance, will produce a materially wrong project cost, because linear-foot pricing already has the (fixed, small) cross-section baked into the per-foot price.

Turning board feet into a real project cost

Once you have a board-foot count, converting it to a dollar figure is one more multiplication: board feet x price per board foot = material cost, before accounting for waste. Board feet is not a complicated unit once the definition is fixed in your head as a volume, not a length — the confusion almost always comes from silently swapping in nominal dimensions, forgetting that rough stock will shrink further, or reaching for board feet when the job actually called for linear or square feet instead.
