15° is the miter angle for a regular 12-sided box or frame — the finest division in the common polygon set, and the same per-edge angle used by the single most popular segment count in segmented bowl turning.

Why this one specifically

A dodecagon shows up in furniture as lazy-susan bases, clock surrounds and some decorative box lids, but its bigger role on this site is on the lathe rather than the miter saw: when turners talk about a "12-segment ring" without further qualification, this is the angle behind it, because twelve segments is the default most books and tutorials teach before anyone customizes the count. That means 15° gets far more real-world use in segmented turning than it does in flat box-and-frame work, even though the underlying geometry is identical either way.

What moves the number

Nothing about material changes this figure. What does matter is which craft you're applying it to: a flat 12-sided frame uses this as a simple miter with no bevel, while a segmented turning ring built from the same 15° angle is stacked and glued into a solid blank before any cutting on the lathe begins — a completely different process from assembling a frame.
