Why this one specifically

Douglas-fir is sold as its own named species rather than folded into the SPF grouping, and it's the strongest common softwood in North America — the backbone of structural glulam beams — which is also why it's a genuinely difficult wood to hand-plane cleanly: hard latewood bands and soft earlywood bands wear unevenly under an edge, corrugating the surface unless the cut stays light and the iron stays sharp.
