An 8-foot 1x6 contains 2.75 board feet — at this actual thickness (0.75") and 8-foot length, board feet works out to exactly half the actual width in inches, since (0.75 x 8) / 12 reduces to 0.5, leaving the width scaled by one-half rather than left unmultiplied the way a 2x board is.

Why this one specifically

1x6 is common fence-picket and general-purpose trim stock, usually bought in quantity — the half-the-width shortcut here is genuinely useful for a fast mental check across an entire 1x-at-8-foot order before running the real numbers through the calculator.

What moves the number

This uses the actual 0.75" x 5.5" dressed dimension; the nominal 1" x 6" would overstate the true volume, the same nominal-versus-actual gap dimensional 2x lumber has, just proportionally smaller since 1x stock loses less material to surfacing relative to its nominal size. Length is the other lever — double the length to 16 feet and the board-foot count doubles right along with it, since the relationship is strictly linear once the cross-section is fixed.
