For crown molding with a 45° spring angle at a standard square corner, the compound settings work out to a 35.26° miter and a 30° bevel — and that 30° bevel landing on an exact, round number isn't a coincidence worth ignoring: it's one of the few compound crown settings that matches a saw's built-in detent.

Why this one specifically

45°-spring profiles have become more common than the traditional 38° spring in recent years partly because the saw settings work out more conveniently — a 30° bevel is a stop most compound miter saws already have, where 38°-spring crown's 33.86° bevel is not. That's a real, practical reason some installers prefer sourcing 45°-spring molding when they have a choice: one less setting to dial in by hand, one less place for saw-scale drift to sneak into sixteen feet of running trim.

What moves the number

This treats the molding as sitting against a standard square 90° inside or outside corner — an out-of-square wall corner (common in older houses) shifts both figures away from these values, and needs to be measured and compensated for separately. It also relies on this site's slope-from-horizontal convention (0° = a flat, unflared frame): a 45° spring angle, measured from the wall, converts to a 45° slope in that convention only because 90 minus 45 happens to equal 45 itself — at any other spring angle the two numbers diverge, so don't assume spring angle and slope are always interchangeable. Always cut a test scrap in the actual molding profile before committing a full length.
